The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I didn't worry about about the weapon discharging, it is more dangerous to fall on it. Especially a scattergun with those nasty rabbitear hammers sticking out of it.......

Frog, oh man, oh man! What the heck did he do to himself?? (It's always something.) My gelding had something worse so dont feel bad. A trailor accident ripped his face open. The idiots that transported him.... I cant even discuss it!

Anyway, it was too late for stitching. 2 months later after keeping it clean, using peroxide (briefly), warm water, neosporin and Cut N' Heal there is not a mark on him. I pray you have similar results.

PS- Helped a friend debride one of her "friends" mare's wound. This girl had left it so bad it had maggots in it! ("Oh, I thought my fiance was taking care of it." Agggggggggh.) Anyway, it was so full of puss and maggots I wanted to die. The sweetest little horse, with foal, who got attacked by their idiot stallion. It is a gruesome process. I still gag just thinking about it.

How much temprature is that for a cat?

Well, normal is 99 to 102... so it could be a lot, could be just a degree. I think they said her temp was 100 on the last checkup.

Well, I'm back:).

Stanley says that from the looks of my saddle on Harley it should work. Harley is right on the line between a Quarter Horse size tree and a Full Quarter Horse size tree.

His advise was to let Harley get over his soreness, he still is, then put the western on him and ride him till he is sweating really really good, then pull the saddle off. If the sweat pattern is good, the saddle fits, if it's too narrow he will have dry spots on his withers, and I'll need a new saddle.

He never looked at Harley with the English one on, but says from what I told him that he believes it's too narrow too. I've got the widest gullet in it, but he says with the back shifting to the side like that that indicates to narrow.

Oh I guess I should tell you that my saddle is a Quarter Horse size, I'd have to go to a Full Quarter if this doesn't fit.

Well, are you pleased with that answer? Do you think he can wear the old saddle without soring? Soring from that saddle's what started all this!

Harley's not wider than the big thoroughbreds and warmbloods English saddles are made for. I'm disappointed that he would at least evaluate the fit on the horse and made a recommendation from having seen it.

Yeah, my western saddle is a quarter horse size.

I knew when I went that he probably would say he didn't know anything about English Saddles. It's a purely western saddle shop. And he did say he was just guessing about why the saddle would shift to the side.

I just feel he is being honest because he could have said it doesn't fit you need a new one. He even said, I'd like to sell you a new one, but I don't think you need it.

The weather here is suppose to be very nice next week, so I'll give him off till then and then give it a go.

I have never heard of english saddles being notorious for causing sore loins. That's a brand spankin' new one for me!

This may not seem a horse topic but it's a way for me to set my own schedule so I can spend time with them, so.....Do any of yall know the pros/cons of sole propriety vs a corporation. I have to make a decision by tomorrow.

I hope it works... did he recommend any change from what you were doing before? You had gotten a new pad, if I recall... What was the talk about the unevenness?

I'm only disappointed because it wasn't the 'try everything on and all combinations of stuff' kind of experience I was hoping you could have. It'd be nice if he had evaluated them all with the right placement and right amount of pad so you had a couple options and could feel good about switching back and forth as you want, instead of having the English saddle just left with a bunch of question marks over it.

We tried it on without a pad, and then he asked to see the pad I was using. I explain it was a very new pad. He said the pad was good, but he recommended not using anything thicker with this horse.

I'll probably hang on to the English one, and someday when I've got some time to kill go over and have an English Saddle Shop that is over in a neighboring town look at it and the horse.

If the English Saddle had worked, I would have used it without any regret, but if I do have to make a change, I'll go back to Western. I just like it better. I've tried both, and am glad I did. And to be honest, I think it's more a mind thing for me, the image I want. I've felt I'm being disloyal to ME:)..is that nuts or what:). But I'm just trying to be honest.

I'm not sure what the differences are but Mack does, and I believe we are a corporation.

I know from the Round Up club that when you incorporate, that if you are ever sued, they can only sue the business and not get into your personal assets.

I'll get Mack to tell you what he knows. He'll be home in a little while.

Yeah - if the saddle's right on the line of being to narrow, too much pad would make it worse.

I guess I understand about the English... like changing faiths or something ;~D

It's just that either way, your old saddle was showing it's age... it'd be nice to have it redone (when's your birthday?) or have a nice spiffy new one made for when you go to these competitions ;~D That's my image thing :~D I like the horse and tack to look spiffy when I go on organized rides.

For me, I think that makes it spiffy. New ones make you look like a green horn:) LOL...aren't we all funny with our notions. I do like having nice matching pads, headstalls and such, and I know my old pad was just awful, but when I bought it it was the best thing for my NEEDS, and that was most important vs. looks. With Harley being the light colored horse, I think haveing all the black stuff will look sharp. Altho I thought, and still do, think he looked very elegant in his English get up, it was just "I" was elegant, kind of spoiled the effect:) I could just never even want to try English wear for me.

I would appreciate it, if he doesn't mind. I had an appointment with a small business counselor today. He told me that too, about if you weren't a corp your personal assets aren't protected but that most go sole prop. If I go corp then I think I heard that I pay myself a salary but no personal deductions. Since I'm not quiting my day job just yet, I'm not crazy about bumping us up to a higher tax bracket.
