The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Had to get rid of the rain, it's a gorgeous day here, probably in the mid to high sixty's. It will cool down as soon as the sun goes down but I've got another 30minutes :)

Me too. But at this point knitting is starting to look pretty good, very low stress hobby.

If all else fails, you might want to consider a treeless saddle. I've been looking at them here lately because the girl who bought Blade is thinking about getting one. There's all kinds of them, way more than I ever knew existed. She's been looking at one on ebay that's fairly english-looking and it's not too terribly expensive. I've got the link at work, I'll send it to ya tomorrow. I don't really care for the western models. The fenders on them look really strange.

Hey, that would be something to consider.

Here's a pic of the one my friend is considering. The brand name is Hilason. I'd never heard of it before. There's one on e-bay right now that has 4 hours left that's currently at $330-something dollars...

They look kinda strange, but they look kinda cool too.

The other brand name that I'm more familiar with is Bob Marshall, but I don't like the looks of them. I've ridden with quite a few people who have them and they love them, but I think they look weird. There's another brand that I've seen that I like but I can't remember what it was and it was really pricey, like $2500 or more. Way too steep for me. Bob Marshalls are $1500, so they ain't cheap either.

Bob got the Abetta Pathfinder Saddle that is flex tree and it seems to have stopped the back and leg problems of Ghost. The treeless saddle moves around a lot from what I hear.

I figured you'd know about them if anybody did. I hear that a lot of endurance riders use treeless saddles.

The Hilason claims to stay put, even on the most witherless horses. So I don't know. Maybe my friend will buy one and I can try it out.

I think it would really be worth your while to try one before buying one. A lot depends on how you mount of course, Bob has to pull himself up now, so a lot of saddles just come right on over.

I used it on Sarah Lee's throat wound and she has healed up nicely. My trainer told me it was for "proud flesh" Oh well, all I had was ointment and I needed it to drain. Actually come to think of it, maybe I did use it corectly caz I'm kind of proud of the way I healed up her flesh ')

Veterinarian ping!

This is the abdomen of a 18 week old kitten who was spayed yesterday. I picked her up at the vets this morning.

Seems like this swelling has come up rather suddenly this evening. It wasn't there a few hours ago.

You got to get the cat back to the vet. It could be a seroma which is blood building up in the SQ tissue from a bleeder which is also very common. It also could be evisceration which means the fascia layer was not sutured up completely and that is mesentery protruding into the space between the abdominal wall and the skin which is bad. It looks like that considering the size of it and the lack of draining from the skin incision. It will require repairing again. The vet has got to see it to be sure. Right now would be appropriate.......

I would call your vet. Maybe a hematoma but you have redness too. Man, that blood vessel sure looks dilated. Is he in any pain?

Ack... thanks.

I was since able to talk to the on-call vet on the phone (who is not the vet that did the surgery) and I described it as "a 'golf-ball sized' swelling under the surgery site that came up rather quickly." and she thought it was probably a reaction to the dissolving sutures inside? She also thought it could wait till morning. Does she just not want to deal with it tonight?

Blood vessel? Where?

She doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain over it, but the swelling's in a big soft area...

1st pic . Bottom right. Looks like a blood vessel on my computer. It seems the swelling would be beneath tissue or fluid would be oozing.
