The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, OK. I've been going back and forth all day. Every time I pass it I change it:). I'll go ahead and leave it covered a little longer:)

Glad you stayed in your seat! Heh... wish we had pictures of the ride ;~)

Did she take that young one on the ride also? Did he spook when Harley did?

She's coming back tomorrow, she's on vacation this week, I'll try to remember to get her to take some pictures of me and Harley.

No she didn't take this one on the ride. She brought Stormy for that. This one stayed here in the arena while we trail rode.

If Harley hadn't of stopped when he did the out come might not have been so good:). I was starting to slide to one side. He must have been sleeping, Grizzly's never spooked him before....after that he was silly the rest of the time. When Celia and I would ride next to each other him and Stormy would pin their ears at each other....I've seen Stormy do that before when he starts getting tired. We never could figure out who was starting it. Cool weather most likely.

A little history on Peppy. This is the horse that as a foal he got joint ill from not having his navel sprayed with iodine at birth. He had it pretty bad too. Cost her $2000 in vet bills to get him over it and he limped for quite a long time. I've always wondered if when she started riding him much (which at the rate she's going won't be till he's 20:), if he would have any kind of problem.

I don't know much about it, if there are any long term effects from it. Time will tell. I hope not, he's really a nice looking boy, and seems to have a good mind. Didn't get rattled at all by being in a strange place and riding in a bigger area then he was use too.

Heh 'cover-up' spooking, when they spook at something silly, and then spend a lot of energy trying to act like there ~really~ was something scary, honest.... "There it is!" No - "There it is!"

Exactly:) And this is the horse that didn't spook at Grizzly chasing an armadillo right under his nose... go figure, silly boy.

Ah - yes, I remember you talking about that. Was it all joints, or particular limbs to really watch for?

I think I carry a little bias from experience with Arabs, who typically don't mature enough to ride before 3 or 4... but I never think it hurts to wait till 4 or 5 to ride them heavy, I think it probably pays off in old age to not overstress them when they're 2.

Heh... when my old labrador was an old dog and his eyes were failing, I saw him tell a bald-face lie one day... he went barking across the yard at what turned out to be the wheelbarrow. When he got close enough to see that it was just the wheelbarrow, he looked back to see if we had witnessed this, and when he saw us standing there, he kept running past the wheelbarrow and started barking again, as if he was really barking at something else ;~D

I think it was worse in his front knees, I really can't remember now if it got him in all four, but it was definitly bad in his knees. I remember that. They swelled pretty bad.

I don't think horses should be rode hard till at least over 4, but he wasn't even started till last year. She traded out some training on two of her horses for another horse she had that she'd gotten pretty scared of. He was actually Okie's full brother but was a differnt from Okie as could be build wise and personality wise. The only smilarity was their color. Anyway the trainer rode Peppy for 30 days. Celia got him back last April and this week is the first time she's been on him since then. Sooooo, it seems to me that's apretty good indication that he's got a fairly good mind. She walked trotted and loped him. She says he doesn't stop real well. Until he does she doesn't want to get him out on trail. I understand that:)

I'd say so! It's fabulous that he's that good after not following up till now. He might still have some outbursts coming as he starts to question things, but that's a given with any young one.

It so funny how all the horses she's got out of the same mare are at one end of the spectrum or the other. they are either just so laid back or hyper idiots. No middle ground.

Some mares throw whatever they're bred ~to~ but it is interesting that she's gotten polar opposites from repeating the same breeding... genetics is still like a box of chocolates I guess :~\

I had a really nice one. Someone broke the bowl though. I just bought a new one, one of Walmarts most expensive but it gives a new name to slow cooking. I was just trying to speed things up :')
