The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes, and if we did that every day, we'd have brats on our hands."

Wouldn't you know it was dry and almost sunny all morning, and it just started to rain again?

REally:). I use to be too. I've had alot of people act like they thought I was terrible for not giving them:). Almost acted like I didn't "love" them enough. Doesn't bother me anymore. I know my horses are taken care of better then most, they work well, and if a horse can be said to be "happy" which I don't think they can:), mine are, or at least content.

Well darn:(. What's the forecast?

But you know, if it's raining, and you keeps you in, you'll get to do alot of good visiting. Sometimes when you have company like that and you run them around trying to make it as entertaining as you can, the visit just turns into alot of work. Since it's such a short visit, and the weather isn't coorperating, I'd just curl up on the couch and talk and talk and talk and......:)

And that's what she said she wants to do... visit and veg on the couch ;~D

The forecast is pretty much for mostly rain.
I told her no one in their right mind goes from Miami to Washington for a vacation in February. ;~D

LOL, well you're probably right:). But if it's not sight seeing she's interested in, then I guess the weather isn't an issue.

I don't give treats without a reason, but if I've just done something unpleasant to them, like worming, shots or trimming feet, they get one when it's all done, just as a reward for cooperation. I've also kept treats in my pocket when trail riding where we might come upon backpackers or mountain bikers and asked them to give the horse one if they would. It makes the horse a whole lot less afraid of strange looking boogie men on the trail if they think they might have a treat. Not for everybody I know, but that's just me.

I don't have an opinion either way about treats. I figure it's your horse. Do what you want. The only thing I do is not to give them routinely at the same time for the same thing, with a few exceptions. Sarah Lee gets an apple bar after each shot of Penicillin. If it spoils her a little and she starts bugging me for shots, I'll stop:')

We had "twins" out here at one time. One was an orphan. The mare took right to him and didn't treat either any differently that I could see. I called them Thunder and Lightning. You always heard them and felt the ground shaking before seeing them. They liked hiding and running.

I don't like the way I worded what I was trying to say in post 6971. Sorry, "your horse" wasn't meant as your horse but horses in general.

Yeah, but it just seems a shame to give all the left overs to the dogs:')

(Chuckling)

I was reading the AI posts today. The only people I would see doing this are people that have expensive mares. If the associations won't accept them though, why are they doing it?
