The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning.

Looking forward to lots of pictures of the visit:)

Ruthie have a safe trip. When do you arrive in Wash.? What's on the agenda?

It looks to be a nice day here today. I'm planning on riding this afternoon.

Becky

I think she's already in the air...

She arrives here about noon local (I need to get her flight info from Ramius!)

Ramius is picking her up, and I think they're going to go to the beach house to visit the folks for a short bit, and then they'll be here... I hope they get here before dark, but I don't know they will... It's been getting dark around 5 these days, so it depends how long they dally at the beach house.

Oh, well that means a long day of waiting for you, Huh:(!. I hate that. When something exciting is going to happen I want it to be in the morning, I hate sitting around all day waiting:).

Yeah - long day waiting indeed! I'm not really ready for her to get here yet, still need to finish getting the kitchen cleaned up and need to clean stalls and such, but I figure I'll be ready about noon.

Don't hold me to it, but if I remember correctly, her mother was the same way with her foals. Preach wasn't bottle fed but was raised by a nurse mare herself. I think it has more to do with a temperament issue since she is also difficult to handle in general.

She sure doesn't have any maternal instincts.

I wonder how they get the nurse mares to accept a strange foal. Most mares would bite or kick the daylights out of a strange foal if you tried to make her let it nurse.

That reminds me a little of the pretty difficult first hours we had with this mare and foal.

This was her first foal and she rejected it. She slammed the poor thing against the wall several times and we rushed in and intervened. The vet was called and said he was coming out, and he said... I'll tell you right now you've got a choice. Put that foal down, or be every bit as hard on that mare as she's being on that foal and hope you can get her over this.

It wasn't pretty, but it wasn't ~all that bad~ either... we just had to halter the mare and hold a big riding whip, and really go after he when she tried to kick the baby. I felt so bad for mom and baby, but after the initial hours, she turned out to be a fine momma.

She was just confused and hurtin' down there, and didn't know what this thing was that was suddenly in the stall with her.

I think the ones they use for nurse mares are just those nice old mares that have had a bunch of their own and will nurse anything.

There are a number of techniques. But, most of these nurse mares have been selected because they have such easy going temperaments and strong maternal instincts, that they easily accept a new foal. One way to do it is to use stocks. Once you take away the mare's own foal, she will get very uncomfortable from the full bags and will want a foal to nurse. So, you put her in the stocks and bring in the foal to nurse. She won't be able to move, kick, or bite. After a day or 2, they usually accept the new foal.

My daughter has a mare that stole her herdmate's foal soon after birth. Twiggy was nursing her foal AND Zena's foal. My daughter had to physically separate the mare/foal pairs until Twiggy gave up trying to steal the other foal. Some mares just have very strong maternal instincts and will take on any foal.

...Some mares just have very strong maternal instincts and will take on any foal.

Last year I had 2 mares that I thought were supposed to foal, but one of them apparently aborted or reabsosrbed hers at some point, but when the other mare foaled, the open mare seemed to want to be close to the new baby, almost like she was jealous, and I was afraid she would try to steal it, even though she had no milk. The mother mare was very protective at first, but eventually relaxed and let the other mare get close. The baby seemed to bond with them both and in fact spent most of her "hanging out" time with the mare that wasn't her mother and only went back to her mother to nurse or sleep. I thought it was kinda nice that she had two "mothers", well actually 3 if you count me.

Jake, that is incredible. Mindblowing is the word. It's like "rent a womb." ;) My mare would be SO thankful. I know she does not want to lose her girlish figure. (We've discussed this at length.) At any rate, that really gives me hope because I just have a feeling carring a foal to term would be a lot to ask of this delicate creature. I love the RT. The more I see the more I like. I would LOVE to show you photos of her baby! What a thrill that would be.

By the way I look up Maharadscha. http://www.gestuet-haemelschenburg.de/html/e_mahara.html. What a beauty. What an interesting line! I'm thinking a big black hunter. All I can think of are the words "Amazing Grace".

wow, Hair, what a story. Thank God you intervened. I've seen them maul their foals to death. What a horrible sight. Your mare and foal are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing that info. Your vet is a smart guy. Its nice to know there are options before going in, BEFORE your confronted with that kind of emergancy for the first time.

Maybe if we took a few new human mothers and tried that we wouldn't have so many abused and battered kids. I'm volunteering my whip. ;) Good cause.

Why don't people freeze sperm before gelding. I have heard so many people say about their horses "if I had known how well he was going to turn out I would have kept him for a stud".

Cindy Dawg, Good question!

Keep in mind not all registries allow stored semen or AI unless both horses are live at the location. I think Arabian Registration still doesn't allow it and some others don't either. I figure there's lots of good genes out there... It's not hard to find a stud.

I looked up, because I didn't want to guess... and Thoroughbreds also do not allow shipped semen... or surrogate mares for that matter... They will only allow AI if both mare and stallion are present and it's immediate.

D. To be eligible for registration, a foal must be the result of a stallion’s Breeding with a broodmare (which is the physical mounting of a broodmare by a stallion with intromission of the penis and ejaculation of semen into the reproductive tract). As an aid to the Breeding, a portion of the ejaculate produced by the stallion during such mating may immediately be placed in the uterus of the broodmare being bred. A natural gestation must take place in, and delivery must be from, the body of the same broodmare in which the foal was conceived. Without limiting the above, any foal resulting from or produced by the processes of Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer or Transplant, Cloning or any other form of genetic manipulation not herein specified, shall not be eligible for registration.

Hello,

Just got in from riding. It's a very nice day here. We climbed alot of hills again today. The first ride I'm hoping to go to in April is in Ark, and that's all that ride is, up and down. Very little flat land.

Ruthie made it in yet?

Becky

Will do :~D

We did buy a bag of carrots so the horses will give her the time of day at the gate...

I'm with you on frequent treats, but when visitors come, it's really the best way to get the horses to come up and stay interested in them :~D

That's just a disclaimer for all the folk who will say "but you were giving treats in those pictures!" "Yes, and if we did that every day, we'd have brats on our hands."
