This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

People are nothing if not good theater :~D
I'm like you I think they are just very very good at listening, and pick up all that stuff from what the owners say without even realizing they have said it.
Chris said his mother wrote down everything the lady said. I'd be much more interested to hear what Chris's mother said. Might shed some light.
Great pictures. That looks a lot like the trails that are at the Ark. CTR I've been too.
Becky
Well my horse is saddled, and Julia should be here shortly. I think I'll go lope some circles. See you all later.
Becky
Have a good ride...
I'm busy on domestics today... getting ready for Ruthy's visit :~D
So are you going to take Ruthie on any rides? Is there any trails open you could take her on, probably too wet huh:(?
Becky
It's too wet, most trails are closed or should be, they'd be muddy... and the trailer's rather tied down and tarped for winter. So going somewhere is out.
If it's nice and she wants to, we'd certainly saddle up and let her ride here, but we're not counting on it necessarily. She's already said she's gonna come back in summer sometime ~with~ Becky to ride.
We did have a good ride.
We saw another armadilla, this one was heading away from us. We also came across a dead dog, it looked like some kind of hound dog, but it looked to have a gunshot wound, and it hadn't been there very long at all, maybe just yesterday, no smell yet.
And, remember I talked about the scary guy that lives behind me that blocked some trails, and it pissed me off:). But then I ran into him and he apologized and opened the trails back up. Well he recently put up some more fence and a gate, but on one side he put the pipe low enough for my horse to step over but tall enough that 4 wheelers can't get over. He stopped by my house and told me the low pipe was for me, and I was welcome to ride there anytime, and any signs that he put up were not directed at me at all, but at the people on 4wheelers.
Today there was sign (and what a sign, yikes) that said, "4wheelers beware, If I catch you I'll slit your f_____g throat". And it was spelled out. Makes me rather nervous. I'm afraid he's just going to make things worse, if he is having problems.
Becky
WHOO HOO:)!!!!
Becky
Glad he gave you access, and you're right, I think that kind of overt antagonism might indeed make things worse.
Gosh - how dreadful to find the dog... Do you think the same owner shot it as trespassing? or some other person?
No this wasn't anywhere near his land. And the land it was on is a wide open area, no houses anywhere near, but a place where there are alot of 4 wheeler tracks. So it's hard to say.
Do people still hunt coons at night with hound dogs??? I was wondering if the dog either did something wrong, or got hurt and the owner killed it...??? No way to know, but it's going to be awful up there in a few days.
Julia said that sign could get that guy throwed in jail for being threatening???? He's a rather scary looking guy, and lives back there alone. But he's always been very polite and nice to me. I just hate seeing something like that. I don't want there to be trouble back there and guns going off....
Becky
I think there's fewer coon hunters who keep hounds than there used to be, but there's bound to be some. People use hounds for cougar, bobcat, coons and foxes... Up here, they've outlawed hunting with hounds by people's initiative a few years back, so there's even fewer people who keep hounds.
I guess a guy might have shot the dog right there for a multitude of reasons. Does it look like that's what happened, or might he have been shot elsewhere and run, collapsing there? Hounds do often get lost, most wear collars with clear ID and radio beacons for that reason, because they get lost in chases all the time. We had one wander in, tired and hungry to our campsite one time, and I knew when I saw him what had happened because a family friend in AZ used to lose hounds a lot. They'd show up somewhere, and someone would call. I called the number on it, he said the hound had been missing for a week, thanked me, and came right up to get him.
Did he have any collar on?
I don't think you can be arrested for putting up a sign on your own property, but I understand the fear of being caught in the middle of something, keep alert.
Just thinking on it further... while I don't think he'd be arrested just for the sign, it would NOT help his case if someone does turn up missing anywhere near his property.
*2J shimmy*
I'm very excited about the trip. Even though it'll be way too wet to ride, even in the pasture. :-(
I'll make up for it by spoiling the horses with carrots when Hair's not looking. ~smiles~
Well, I suppose we should buy a few carrots so you can do that :~D
I don't think it had a collar on. It was just laying there, right at the side of the trail.
Becky
Well, when you go again, if he did/does have a collar on with ID, and you can stomach it, there might be an owner somewhere wondering what happened to him.
Exactly what I was thinking.
I'm sure whoever it is directed at knows who they are, it could get ugly. Maybe it already is....My main concern is the people that built the big new house on the property next to mine. He's always going off in that direction on his 4wheeler. I hope he's not the problem. I've heard he's been caught hunting on this other property that is posted. I've only seen him once, so I don't know what kind of people they are....
Becky
I wouldn't have a problem looking if it's not smelling too bad. I wasn't paying that much attention as I rode by because Harley was really looking and Grizzly was sniffing at him, and Julias horse was really prancing around, I was just trying to get away from it. If I was by myself, I don't think I'd have a problem.
