The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Everyone is probably going to laugh at me, but I was looking at the picture of the mare and her trainer, and how old is he? My eyes might be bad, but he looks about 18 in that picture. It might be the cap and the necklace.

You're right of course, but the man that trained Harley was like 82:). He does have a younger trainer get on them the first time. He just does all the finess training. But even that IMO, is risky. You never know when a youngun is going to decided to be frisky:)

Bay went into the deeper puddle in the back forty without any coaxing, but he still won't go across the big shallow one out in the pasture... (freely anyway) go figure.

That larger tree on the right that's in the water is a Ponderosa pine, more native to AZ than WA. It won't like having it's feet that wet very long.

82 - wow... I'm reluctant to get on a green one at 36!

I got thrown a couple years ago, and it hurt a lot more than it did as a kid. :~D

it was a surprise and not a criticism at all...

Oh, I know you were not criticizing. Frankly, I didn't even notice the bit, until you mentioned it. I would have thought it unusual also, but it must work ok for him.

Beaker, the trainer is 21.

The last time I was thrown was last year from Harley, and for some reason, it didn't hurt a bit, but that was luck. The time before that I was 49, and it took 3-4 weeks to get over.

This old guy that trained Harley is very well known around here. He's a class "A" show judge, a very good trainer. He charges $750 for 30 days and won't take one unless he gets it for 90 days. And the last I heard he was booked solid on horses for like the next 3 years. He doesn't take that many any more from what I've heard, I think he only works 2 at a time.

I'm thankful to have Harley and the training he's got, because there is no way I could afford, or probably even want to pay that kind of money for training.

It seems a lot to pay, but not much when you think of the risks they take to ride a horse the first 30 days.

There's also a guy on the forum named Eaker. I get his posts now and again, and I'm sure that he must get some of mine.

I would like to. I was thinking about putting a mobile home with them though. That way I could leave a light on and a car out there to make it look like someone there and also have a place to camp out at.

No, haven't heard from her. Can I put an old GreyHound bus without a motor on your property? :')

I went and looked. Pbviously, there aren't any restrictions and it's out in the middle of nowhere. An open 3 horse stall has been built and a 3 or 4 plank wood fence up which wouldn't hold my horses 5 minutes. I'm looking at 2 more pieces this week . This one already has water and lights which is good. We "may" buy it. It's probably about 5 more minutes out of my way.

It sounds like a really good prospect. Run some hot wire on the inside of the wood fence and your horses will stay put until you can put up better fencing.
