The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He is awesome at dressage however and is a very elastic mover. He has the most comfortable canter, just like a gentle rocking chair. I swear I could sip tea from a china tea cup and sit his canter at the same time without spilling a drop.

Oh that sounds heavenly!

The vet told me to go ahead and start dosing her with PCN tomorrow. I hate giving those shots.

Did he see her or is he just guessing on the diagnosis? Either way, I think PCN would be good.

We've used a mobile groomer for my elderly cocker spaniel. They did a great job, but sadly now they're out of business. I guess there wasn't enough of a market. They were called "Wash my dog." I hope that things work out with Tuffy. I've been wondering how you all have been doing.

He's out of town. He calls. It's not necessarily a bad thing but different here. We are not horse country and the few that have them are expected to know how to treat sick ones, including strangles, or learn.(the seasoned horse owners set you straight real fast) Horse Vets are considered "for emergencies" what ever those might be. He told me that what I was doing was what he would do if he came out. They don't focus much on diagnosises but symptoms. He wants to see her in a week or so and wants me to spend my money on things I can't do, like a blood work up and eval on why she keeps getting sick. If I can get the blood myself all the better. Then he will have the results when he sees her.

I must admit that I do call all the horses that I work with "sweetheart" :-) but I don't take any crap either. Right now I'm working with a very pushy appy who has no respect for people or personal space, and I have no qualms about pushing him around, because he needs to be pushed around. We had a lesson with the gate the other day because he tried to bully his way out. He's also very strong in hand, and I'll walk him up and down the property stopping and starting and stopping and starting again so that he has to listen. It usually works like a charm. He's not bad, he's just never had to learn manners before now. (And he's gotten much better)

I understand what you're saying. I am encouraged that he wants to do some evaluation on why she is getting sick. And a blood workup will be good. Is that something you feel comfortable doing? If I remember correctly, the blood is drawn from the jugular vein. Double check that though, don't rely on my memory. :)

I haven't done it before. The stable owner has and will help or he'll just have to come out and do it. I watched the vet give Okie pain medicine in his jugular.

I'm glad to hear that. I watched my son do it and it's not something I'd want to try at all. Be sure and let us know what he finds out.

Hey, I call Harley "Big Guy":). I think what this guy, and ShakeNJake were trying to get across was the attitude you have towards the horse. I know alot of people who what to train a horse with "love and treats". I'm sorry my opinion on that is it won't work, and not only does it not work, it turns the horses into brats. The horse I saw the guy working with was exactly that a brat created by a person who was 1. either afraid of him, or 2. was afraid of not being the horses "friend". I can understand and sympatize with the first type, but they need to realize they have a limitation and get help or give up because otherwise they are NOT doing the horse any favors, The 2nd type, I just want to slap the hair off them:).
