The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Is she having difficulty breathing?

She's breathing ok. She only had to stop that once in the pasture to cough that stuff out. Mine didn't have that strangling sound and problems breathing when they had stangles because they ruptured but they would have to stop and cough junk out with any exerction including walking. If it's a relapse it's very mild or she's in the early stages.

Her throat was very tight yesterday. If it's illness she may have fixed the problem herself.

Okay, back again. Upper respiratory inflammation can become chronic and develop bronchitis or bronchopneumonia. She should be kept in a warm, dry, dust-free place, rested and fed soft foods. Antitussives for the cough, antibiotics or sulfonamides for infection, analgesics for the pain, or expectorants are all possible veterinary treatments.

That was verbetum from the book. Bob is just guessing so it really would be good for a vet to see her. I think I remember you saying she was short of breath, I don't remember you mentioning a cough.

It apparently could be viral rhinopneumonitis, viral arteritis, influenza, infectious bronchitis or strangles. Until she is well, I would take precautions to not transfer any germs to Okie. See him first, etc, and then SL.

If you are giving penicillen to her that's what we would be doing. It could just be a cold also, although the stopping to catch her breath sounds like it's a bit more. Maybe a warm rag against the knot will open it up to drain?

I wouldn't keep strangles out of the picture, and I'm inclined to think that it might be, but I also don't want to get you all worried in case I'm wrong. (And I also realize that a few posts ago I said it might be an infected wound, but I didn't realize that she was coughing stuff up) Either way I think it's important to test for Strangles right away because of all the other horses. How long has this been going on?

I didn't see any PCN. She has the refrig stuff locked up and I forgot the code. I put her on sulfa . I just have to give it twice a day.

I vac her for Rhino and influenza. Do you call it a cough? Just that one time she had to stop and hack that stuff up. The force was strong enough that she got it on my sweater. After that just dripping. I have her in the barn but I decided not to put the blanket on. If she starts a fever tonight she might get too hot and it seemed comfortable.

I think the sulfa will work fine - it appears that it is anyway. No, just hacking stuff up once isn't a cough - I misunderstood you about that. I get stuff hacked all over me everytime I go to a horse show - the dust sets it off.

You're warm enough there she doesn't need to have a blanket on, and you're right - it could get too warm for her. Being by herself is good though. Just dripping sounds so much like just a cold, it's the knot under her jaw that bothers me some. That sounds like an infection - almost like swollen glands in a person.

Even the knot wasn't that big a concern for me because it's going down. Knowing that it was or is draining is though. I would like to bandage it but I would have to wrap her jaw and she would probably work it off or get it caught on something.

What nice people. I smiled when I read "cane" That's progress. You probably need to get out but did you know you can order groceries on line?

I think it's better not wrapped and just kept clean. Do you have flies down there? If so, maybe some SWAT on the site to keep flies away.

We are going to be in the 40's-50's thru Tue so I shouldn't have to bother with flies for a few days. It's raining and chilly.
