This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
What lucky babies. I'm assuming it wasn't an injury, so how could someone hurt an animal like that? Is there any type of person they don't like?
The older one was afraid of men for a good while - scared of my husband who is 6'2", but not boys. Hubby finally convinced her that he wouldn't ever hurt her and now she sleeps in his lap :)
It's a bitch for sure. A friend has them and sometimes she is really in bad shape.
Cindy all but paints me a picture. She will cower and go under the table of any guy in uniform but esp fatigues. She is also scared to death of water. She will chase any animal that gets in her yard and will sit right there by her catch.
I can imagine.
Be back later - I made chili for dinner and it is done :)
Hey that's really cool about Waylon! You always knew he was a great horse but it's really neat when others who don't even know him think so too.
How come you're having to return the riding sneakers? Seems like I remember they were Ariats. I've got some of those too and I love them. They're much more comfortable than the cheaper brands I've been buying all these years. The only thing I don't like about them, and I'm not even sure that it's really a dislike, is that they grip the stirrup too well. It's great when you're hauling butt down the trail, but it can be a little annoying when you're trying to get your foot in the stirrup to mount up. And they're a little hard to get out of the stirrup if your horse moves while mounting or you just don't make it up there the first time.
Since the others have covered the question of worming in the mouth vs in the feed, I thought I'd cover the question about it being too early. No, it's not too early. I usually worm my foals about 3mths of age, but I have a bit of an advantage since I imprint them and halter break them the day they are born. I agree with Becky about the need for him to be halter broke ASAP. He ain't getting any smaller if you know what I mean. Like someone else said, I also like to use a little applesauce in an old wormer tube from time to time, even on the older horses. That way they never know if they're getting the "good stuff" or the wormer and they seem to cooperate a lot better.
Wow! Cool old house! It looks familiar. Where was it? The one I'm thinking about was in the Brick-Hatton community, on a side road out Hwy 184 almost to the Lawrence County line.
Or train your horse to lay down for you to mount! ;o)
Seriously though, I did see a horse that was trained to do that. He is a Fresian and his owner is a paraplegic. He'll come lay down by her chair. Pretty cool!
Ok, seems I've caught up now and nobody else's awake so I'm going back to bed, or at least have a little breakfast. :o)
I didn't get to ride yesterday either. There was enough of a threat of rain to throw a wrench in any plans. It did rain early, but I did manage to get hubby to put out some more gravel at the barn later on in the afternoon. Now I can get all the way from the front around to the run-in stall in the back of the side without slogging through the mud. So nice! We also got a couple of half rolls of hay put out for the mares. My hay supply where they are is getting kinda low so we had to use the rolls that they had managed to half-way eat through the side of the barn. They sure were happy too because they had completely eaten the last one. We're eating lunch at my in-law's today like we usually do on Sundays (we're moochers) so I may try to get the mare's feet trimmed today if it doesn't rain, but I think it's supposed to. Anyways, that's my plans. Talk to y'all later...
Well, I try to get up early, but you are a few hours ahead of me!
~sip~
I just had to come back and throw in my 2cents worth on this one. You know what they say about opinions and @$$holes, so take it for what it's worth. ;o)
I think that there is a need for "average" horses. If we left all the breeding to the pros, the "Average Person" may not be able to afford to buy a horse. And the characteristics that the "Pros" breed for isn't always what the Average Person wants.
Most professional breeders (and this is in the Gaited Horse world because it's my only point of reference) breed for show characteristics... i.e. high head carriage, big pacey gait (because it's easier to modify), fiery temperament(because they look "showier") etc., etc. That's the LAST thing your average pleasure horse owner wants. This kind of breeding has almost ruined some of the gaited horse breeds, in my opinion, and I think it has in some of the others too, like Quarter Horses, with those too-small feet and massive amounts of muscle.
Hair, you've said yourself (in so many words) that great horses like Cyn would never have been bred by a professional breeder. The characteristics she has wouldn't be "valuable" to them, but they're worth their weight in gold to you and ecurbh.
All I'm saying is that CindyDawg wants to raise a foal, who are we to say that she shouldn't.
Off Soapbox
LOl! Hey, I ain't knocking sleeping in late. I stayed in bed 'til 9 yesterday morning. It sure is nice sometimes.
A friend can say she shouldn't, and should say so if they think it's not the right thing... but no one can stop her. That's what advice is: optional. I thought through what I said carefully and said what I think. I think it's an expensive diversion from her becoming more serious about riding. CindyDawg... I didn't say it's intrinsically wrong for you to want to raise a foal, I'd just like to see you become a really comfortable and confident rider now while you're as young as you'll ever be... get a puppy now, and go on trail rides and really learn to master your horses for the next few years... for your sake. It's not about the breeding.
This is something I decided over a year ago. If you go back, you will see that I mentioned something about it a few times, way back.Riding and raising are two different things in my opinion though. I plan to continue riding and learning. I don't know if I will ever be as good as some of yall. That's the goal but as long as it's fun , and my horses managed, I'm ok where I'm at. Since I have no intention of being the 1st person to get on the back of a young horse and feel that should be left to experts that leaves breeding and training. I have complete confidence in myself that I can do it. I haven't been twiddling my thumbs as I learned to ride. I have listened, helped out and learned a lot of stuff. Example ,all the post in the world couldn't have prepared me to see the dropping with impending labor as seeing it myself. I think, no, I know I can do this and it would be a fabulous learning experience. I pay for the service of a 24/7 staffed stable with the option to deliver a foal without charge for 6 months so I figured I might as well take that opportunity . I do have 4 self requirements that I must meet
1. I can't neglect Okie during this time.
2 . I keep riding.
3. I have a place to take them when the foal is 6 months.
4.I am able to commit to the time that a baby will need
5. I be prepared to keep all my horses unless just the right owner shows up.
OK :~D
Good day to go out to the gun club. Been awhile since I have been there. Speaking of guns. The Women's Outlook magazine from the NRA has a nice picture of the Champion, Cowboy Mounted Action Shooter on the cover and it's a lady! Very nice articles pertaining to the sport and also the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. If I recall, didn't Tuffydoodle visit it?
Woot! Looks like fun!
I'm gonna need more coffee before I want to try that :~D
