This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He stays at the barn, they show him, ride him 3 to 4 times a week and treat him right. Oh and that I can ride him one time a week. You think that would be ok or should I stay away?
It depends on whether you're helpful or a pest. ;~D For example, I think the 'ride 3-4 times per week' is too nannyish, but you could certainly stipulate what ~kind~ of riding is allowed and by who, or what feed they need to feed him.
I leased the 1/2 Arab mare I showed in high school, and the woman was coming over all the time, quizzing me about every dang thing, etc. She relaxed after awhile, but I think my trainer told her to back off, either lease the horse or don't. ;~D
My stallion was also leased, and they'd come to see him show sometimes, but otherwise left me alone.
I bet there's sample leases on the internet, unless your trainer has one, that you can look over to see which fine print you want.
We have three babies coming this year, one due Feb. 15, one May 9th and one May 16th.

The riding was Eddies want but it's best I guess if we stay back. The 3 -4 times a week mine. I don't want someone that comes out before a show and never spends time with him. I used to get so mad when my kids were showing pigs for AG. This one kid's dad would buy him an expensive pig. The kid hardly came out. Others would feed and care for him. We would tell his teacher a for a few days he was ok and then right back to his tricks. About a month before show he would show up and lay the food to him and run him almost to death for muscle. He always placed. Okie eats but I don't want him neglected or treated mean though. Maybe this may not be a good idea.
You can stipulate a lot of things... but the 3-4 times a week was just a bit much to ask... You don't do that. If you interview and find the right horse crazy kid with good parents (interview them!) he'll be fine.
He's young. He'd be fine healthwise if they did just take him to shows and not much else... or climb on and run around the pasture once a week. But he won't be polished if they do that, and they won't do well.
Why would I want to do this then? I guess I don't understand. I'll be paying his board still. My problem is that right now I don't have the time to work with two horses like they need. If a kid only going to come out once a week or so, I'm might as well stay where I am without the headache.
On a lease, they should pay board. That's why you do it. To relieve yourself of the cost without having to sell him.
The "free" part merely means you aren't charging rent for him. They pay all ongoing costs, board, shoeing, incidental expenses. In exchange, they should have the freedom to make all the day to day decisions much like an owner would, within your rules.
I don't know that I would do a free lease on him - I'd probably ask vet and horsing or board bill. Either way, a child would be getting a bargain, a great horse to ride and show that they wouldn't be able to afford to buy.

I had though about shoes and vet because people appreciate things more when they have an investment. I'll just see if anyone is interested and what they can afford.
If you found the right kid, you could charge a nominal amount, and let them work that off if necessary.
I'm going to try to get one tomorrow! He's just been playing in the mud, since it finally rained a little today.
The digital camera just came back with my hubby, and we need to get pictures of Ranger AND my teenaged chickens. The chickens all kind of gangly-looking and half feathered right now, so I'll don't think they'd be nearly as cute as the colt anyway ...
But I still think they're pretty!

horsing = horse shoeing, my fingers are dislexic and they can't spell.
I just need to hire me an "old cowboy" :')
