OK - why so complicated? Who's getting what and why?
Glory be, will you look at that!!! :)
Becky
You will like this one, I think it was made in the fifties.
OK - I'll look for it when browsing :~D
I'm feeding a breeding stallion who is also an endurance horse, plus a mare and gelding that run endurance. Then three pregnant mares, three long weanlings, a coming two year old, a mature mare in training, a mature mare in shows, and two aged geldings, along with everything else. In all, 17 horses, various ages and work.
I am sure it is on DVD somewhere.
It was shown on the Turner South network.
The Omelene formulas by Purina are excellent too. I just like pellets tho. That's why I'd go Stratgey.
Becky
I also like Purina - I've never worried about quality with them.
That's a lot of horses to figure the right one feed for, but I don't see why they couldn't all work well on varying amounts of a good quality complete feed with as much grass hay as you want to feed... Only exception would be to switch the mares and foals to Mare'n'Foal when they're due...
The endurance horses need high protien, with vitamins and minerals to sustain endurance and good bones, the brood mares need feed to build good foals and produce milk, the weanlings need something to promote healthy growth, etc. etc.
I looked at the Omaline but, like you, I prefer pellets. They are totally consistant. Thanks for the testimony :), Strategy it is then.
IMO, strategy would work for all of them.
I raised Dot on Horse Chow 100, Rocky has always gotten it, Belle got it all thru her pregnacy, now that I'm thinking about it I did add Calf Manna to her feed the last month of pregnacy and the first 3 months after. To be hones, I don't think she really needed that. I just wanted to make sure her milk was good.
Oh, and Horse chow is basically the same as Strategy except with the added roughage.
Becky
Good luck!
Went to the farm today to check on my planters. Several of the cheap plastic tarps were so weathered that they were in tatters. With the help of a neighbor I managed to get new tarps in place and tied down. Unfortunately, I overdid it and got chilled. Paying for that tonight as I am still cold.
We have been feeding Mare and Foal but I think that Strategy will provide the same nutrients and protein, just by adjusting the amount fed. Everyone but Prez gets Alfalfa hay.
Gotcha.
I feed Equine Senior and grass hay to all ours (I just feed way less to the pony) They don't have needs near as demanding as yours. I mix the Senior pellets with a little sweet COB when I think they don't need it that rich. Right now I'm mixing their feed two bags senior to one bag sweet 12.
Isn't alfalfa too rich with a complete feed too?
Exactly:).
Just FYI. Prez would probaly do just as well on Horse Chow 100, and it's alot cheaper then Equine Senior. My Daughters old old horse was on Horse Chow when he died. The vets were shocked how well he looked for his age. When I told them what I fed, they said that was the reason. They can digest the pellets even if they don't chew them well.
Becky
Well, take care of yourself and turn the heat up.
Eeek. I better go help my honey with stalls. We have to get horses in.
Keep us in formed on how they do?
Becky
That's what I'm trying to end :) mixing feeds. It sounds like what you're doing works well for your guys though.
