This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Have you rode before, Dandelion?
We all gave you the only advice that made any sense to the scenario you posted. Yesterday, this colt thought you were "satan or something. He considers me to be the root of all evil.." and "He's a big boy for his age, and frankly it's a little frightening when he keeps coming closer and biting me over and over again."
Today, because of your hurt feelings, you're making him sound like the title character in a child's story about a girl and her beloved foal. You're not being honest with us, or realistic.
I apologized for being blunt, but blunt was the only way to be. Yesterday you painted a picture that was a recipe for getting yourself hurt. All of any of us said was "It would be better for you to start out with an older horse... or, if you are really intent on this one, get some expert help." I didn't want to lie to you, nor can we possibly, on this forum, be able to help you train that colt by proxy.
I'm not really upset. I was just pointing out that YOU ASKED for advise. You were given the correct advise in a most gentle tactful way. You choose to get your feelings hurt over nothing.
and a little encouragement.
If you saw someone who had never driven a car before get in a corvette and take off at 100mph, would you encouage them when they came and asked advise about why they had a wreck?????? Would you pat them on the back and say you did a good job???? Not if you were a caring person you wouldn't.
said I was a fool,
Show me where anyone said you were a fool>
I even told you all I appreciated the advice, even while I was crying about it. I'm not sure why that should bother you.
No you didn't. You acted like a baby, asking to be taken off the ping list, and saying you just were giving up on the horses. No one told you to do that.
I just put my hand on his nose and told him no, and he stopped.
He needs something done to him alot more then a "no". He might have stopped this time but it will get worse. Stud horses are prone to bite. If he had bite his mother she would have, and probably did a few times, kicked him across the pasture. Your' not going to dominate that horse with a NO. You're asking to get hurt treating him like you are. That is not to say tho, that you can't learn how to treat one.
I doubt you'll do anything advised here. I've seen other new horse owners on this thread do the same things you're doing, they never listen, they all want to find "their own styles" of dealing with horses, and some of them have stopped riding because they can't control their horses now. But they all want to come one here and be PC, and never do the hard stuff, and then act offended just like you when they are advised tactfully what to do. Personally, I don't worry anymore, it's their problem, I just feel sorry for the horses their ruining, and who will land up such brats they won't be good for nothing but dog food.
Don't fuss at me anymore, I'm doing what you all said should be done - but no, there won't be another horse,
I can fuss all I want, IT'S A DEBATE FORUM. And no you aren't doing ALL you were told to do. You were asked nicely, begged not to leave here, not to give up on horses, but you say that's exactly what you're planning on doing.
You're not serious about wanting to learn. I'm not wasteing anymore of my time on you.
Becky
You're right about our motives... and probably also about our opinionated nature :~D Sorry about that!
No, not done with horses, done with money for horses for a while. As in, I blew my horse buying budget already, and I really can't bring myself to ask for the money back from the breeder. There's nothing wrong with this horse, so me just saying "whoops, I changed my mind" isn't really ethical - at least I feel that way about it for me. I know if he had another horse he'd be willing to trade, it'd be different. But he doesn't want to part with any of his foundation herd, and I can understand that...
Then for me to go to hubby and say "Look, I know you bought me this horse, but forget that one. How about another?" I'm not sure I could pull that off, even if I was wearing nothing but a feather boa and a smile!
I've got neighbor dynamics to deal with here, hubby dynamics to deal with here, and Free Republic dynamics to deal with on top of all this. The last thing I want to do is hack off my well-intentioned neighbor and irritate my husband after I've already made you all peeved.
I need some chocolate NOW.
I did not let those #$%^ cows out lol.
I believe you :~D
The cheapest part of a horse is his price:. Might as well get that 2nd job or forget about the new car:') .How about telling him you need a 2nd horse to be riding until this one is ready caz it's going to be a long time? You could also find a place to take lessons, even if you don't buy a riding horse right now. A place that has babies would even be a plus .
Hey, you ready for "24"????
Becky
CindyDawg: Yes, I have ridden, but not enough. I know just enough to know I don't know diddly squat.
Hair of the Dog: "Today, because of your hurt feelings, you're making him sound like the title character in a child's story about a girl and her beloved foal. You're not being honest with us, or realistic."
Honest to God, he acted like a beloved foal in a child's story today. I am not lying, and I have not lied to you in this case. What would it benefit me?
I was surprised at how nice he was today. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Maybe his name should be Morph or something. It was heartening and yet weird. He was wonderful today. It seems to me that some of you have even said that horses are like that sometimes...
I'm not upset with your advice, I'm upset with the whole situation and I just really need to back up and figure this all out. I'm just really surprised that you're upset I decided to take your advice. And I don't know about you, but I can't pay for one horse, buy feed, hay and accoutrements, and then just go out and pay for another right away. That's why everything is all derailed now. It's discouraging, and without a support group, it's a little hard. I'm glad you all have what you need to make your dreams come true, and you should thank God everday that you have that. Not everyone has that blessing.
Please forgive me, it has been a hard day in more ways than one, and there was something so good in going out to the pen and smelling his mane, I don't know, it made everything seem better. I wish I was a better person so I could do this the way everyone wants me to do it, but he deserves better than me.
As for Becky, I'm sorry I "wasted" your time. I won't do it again. Don't worry.
Please see post 5538
"I'm in over my head and don't know how to train a colt from scratch" is something all horsemen will understand. If he's as well-intentioned as you say, he'll either take the colt back and happily give you your money, or he'll give you the help you need to get that colt started. But either way, the colt still has the value he had when you bought him and the neighbor is out nothing. He needed a place to keep the colt to be weaned. The colt just isn't the right horse for ~you~.
The big issue for you to consider if you aren't made of money is that he won't be ready for you to learn to ride until he's 2-3 years, a lot of sweat, a hundred miles and thousands of $$$ away from where he is now.
I'm just really surprised that you're upset I decided to take your advice.
We're not upset at all... And I don't think any of us advised you to dump this colt at a loss and never get another. Quite the opposite. What I'm a bit peeved at is the "poor me" attitude like it's our fault you're in this predicament. If you would have said two weeks ago "Hey, I've never had a horse, but I want this colt next door" we'd have told you it wasn't the right thing for you.
You want help getting out of this horse predicament? You just ask. Even if you don't like us a lot right now, we are being nothing but honest and forthright with you.
Watchin' the clock!
Me too:).
I haven't looked this forward to a tv show in a long time:)
Becky
Whoever's in charge of the "suspense and anticipation" department is worth their weight in gold I think :~D
We watched the first 2 seasons on DVD, and to tell the truth I like it that way better. Getting 1 hour once a week kind of makes the suspense anticlimatical. But there's no way I could let this season go by and not watch and wait for the DVD:)
Becky
Yeah - we watched 1-3 on DVD. I'd prefer it that way too... but you're not gonna see me holding out either :~D
I was over looking at the 24 thread, and it sounds like some of them have already seen it. I stopped reading:)
Becky
I've been trying to avoid spoilers too.
Well, we were dry most of yesterday and today, but the rain has returned. Supposed to keep on till Tuesday and the flood warnings in the same old places have been renewed.
I bet that green trailer above won't be selling this week.
