Cave , I have a question for you. What can you tell me about cows. Will they charge you?
Who's Cave? :')
Sometimes, but I've always been able to work out an affordable payment plan with them :~D ~rimshot~
chuckling
~shrugs~ ;~D
I laughed anyway. ;-)
Heh... What exact situation are you speaking of? Just walking through a field of them, or on horseback, or what?
In my experience, most times they'd not charge you, they'd run from you if you got close. They can get pushy much like horses if they've been grained and they think you have some (like a bucket in your hand) but that's about it. Bulls are a little more forward and a little less fearful but rarely outright charge.
Cows are in the back pasture. I went in to Sarah Lees to get her. Suddenly about 10 or 15 bunched up and pushed the gate open and started coming in. The horses walked around them and went into their pasture. A few started walking towards me. I felt like getting out of there but I wanted my horse. I was scared and shooed at them with the lead rope and stayed within running distance of the trees. One with horns kept coming towards me. I've had horses act like they are charging and it's never scared me but these guys did. After I got Sarah Lee, I stood there awhile watching. I didn't want her to think I was a fraidy cat though so we went back in. I started to get on her other side but that wouldn't have been right so I didn't. They didn't bother me this time. They just continued to eat the horses food.
Food's all they wanted.
Shoot, I just thought of something. I might as well fess up. I think I might have had apple bars in my pocket.
Heh - so it sounds like you let the cows out of where they were supposed to be and in with the horses? Heh... I bet the owner liked that :~D When cows are being fed they get pushy. And they are really really dumb ;~D
Thsnk you very much but I didn't do anything. I was minding my own business and they knocked their gate down. The beasts just brawned their way in to the horse pasture. If I had been closer they might have went right over me. I was the one miffed.
Hehehehehehe - Oh - OK - You're blameless then to the whole 'cow escape' fiasco. But as the gal on the scene you might still end up with the blame :~D
The ranch that Jenny and I use to work on raised long horn show cattle. There were cows every where. And every pasture had a bull in it. We were never chased in the whole 5 years we worked there. We'd ride right thur herds of them and they'd just kind of part like the Red Sea:). Every once in a while we'd have a curious baby follow a few steps or come towards us, but it was never in a "chargeing' fashion.

I hate cows. I really hate them. Too bad I don't like beef.
Hi CindyDawg, Yes, some will and can seriously harm you because of their heavy weight or horns. Mama cows with calves are the ones to watch especially if you get between her and her calf. The good news is that they will generally let you know with warning signs of what they are about to do, hopefully. If you have watched bullfights and seen that the bull will shake his head and paw the ground before he charges the matador will give you n idea of watch to look out for.
Most cows that are farm raised will be gentle and not bother you except to see if you have something for them to eat. Wild cows do not make good herd cows because they are always on the watch for a reason to run from you. A gentle cow is more concerned with getting a full belly for her and her calf.
If you are going to buy cows let me know and I will tell you what to look for.
Of all the ways to make a living, I would rank raising beef cows at the top of the list. You will work your behind off and not make much money but you will always have plenty to eat.
Thanks. When we get our place we are going to get a few to pay taxes and maybe one for the freezer. I'll get back with you. I was just mad last night because I pay too much money to have to dodge cows to get to my horse. It was feeding time and the owner was late. If I had been by that back gate I might have got hurt because they all tried to come out at once but none were aggressive like you described. The smaller one with the horns that was nursing was the one that kept trying to approach me. As you said, she just probably wanted to eat. I just didn't want to be her dinner:')
Not sure but I think there is a minimum number you have to own before for tax purposes.
Had to make my breakfast today. Usually just have a bowl of cereal but this morning it was eggs with bisquits and gravy.
