This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
My oldest horse likes to do that too. When I first got him (when he and I were both much younger) he once rolled in a mud hole while I was riding him. We were riding along this wooded trail that had obviously been traveled quite a bit by mud riders because it was almost one long 2-track mudhole. It was a hot day and he just suddenly just stops and lays down. I was so shocked that I all I could think to do was just step off of him (and into calf-deel mud). After that I always watched him closely any time we crossed water. But after all these years we've been together, I can tell when he's having the urge to take a dip and can keep him from it now. The longer you get to ride Grandpa, the better you'll get to know him and you'll know what he's gonna do before he does it.
Heh... I had a horse like that... When in water, keep him moving!
You should post your swimming pictures from last summer. :~D
Cool picture:) Where's the pony?
It was cold here all day today, but it is suppose to be 74 tomorrow. Crazy weather. Next week is looking good all week too.

That is the pony there..... Bay's off camera to the right ;~D
I thought that was Bay. Sorry.
An intresting thing happened today. When I was in town at our building a couple of guys pulled up to eat at the resturant next door. They had a horse in a trailer. Before they went in to eat, they got in the trailer and were looking at the horse. i was sort of watching wondering if something was wrong. But they finally went in to eat. The horse was hollering the whole time they were in there. I told mack I'll bet they just bought that horse, and it's hollering for it's buddies.
Anyway, when we came home, Those same two guys were in the front yard of the place where that tiny pony is. Funny thing one of the guys was leading the horse, saddled, with the other guy riding. I don't have a clue if the horse or the rider was green, but it could be fun to watch what goes on there. Maybe the pony is to keep the other one company????

I use to have a mare that laid down 3 times in water with me. Once right after I go my new custom made for her saddle:). Two of the three times she got back up immediatly and I just stayed in the saddle. One time tho, as she was going down the girl I was riding with hollered for me to get off. So I started to get off but she came right back up like the other times. I was hanging off her side and that spooked her and she spun around and I came off and landed in the puddle she was laying down in. Luckily it was summer, but after that I was very careful with her when going thru water. I always took my feet out of the stirrups when going in so that I'd not ever get caught in them if she did go down.
Becky
Heh... she's just a brown blur anyhow ;~D
Huh - could be new green horse, green riders, or they're all green!
Swimming pictures coming right up...
I forgot to ping you to the horsey swimming pictures.
Cool picture of Cyn jumping. They're funny when they do that (unless you're on 'em). ;o)
Those are great. I ~so~ want to find a place we can get to now that is deep water. I used to be able to swim my mustang because he was kept on property that was on the lake. Now...access to lakes is an issue, I don't know anywhere public that is horse-able!
What a strange coincidence about the two guys with the horse trailer ending up in your neighborhood. Sounds like they might provide some interesting viewing in the near future.
ecurbh's very first trail ride she leaped like that over a ditch that was not much bigger. ecurbh was surprised, I hadn't thought to warn him till it was over, and luckily, he stayed with her. :~D
Green on Green makes Black and Blue! ;o)
LOL:)

I think your beach ride idea that you had a while back sounds great. I just watched a rerun of the Dennis Reis episode where they covered teaching a horse to handle the ocean and it looked SO much fun!
Could you not take them up to your Dad's beach house and swim them there? That beach looked plenty firm enough and the lack of waves would be a real plus.
See my post 5116. He was lucky!
We have thought of showing up at the beach there... the trouble is where to put them on the beach. We couldn't do it ~at~ the beach house for fear of doing a lot of damage to the landscaping. We'd have to try to go to the nearest boat launch and ride there along the beach.
BUT - the trouble with swimming them in the sound, or in the ocean for that matter is the water remains very cold. 58 degrees year around. It's bone numbing cold and not what I had in mind :~D
