The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Those trees are closer to the barn, but it would have to be quite the inferno to have them be engulfed I guess.

The snow won't dry it up at all, it's just that with the rain turning to snow in the mountains, it will stick there and stop running off to us.

Bob is in town right now buying a gas pump to pump water out of the front pasture.

It's all clear around the barn. That building you see thru those trees are the neighbors that built a new house last year.

I'm pretty bummed at how bad it is out there. I hadn't really noticed untill the barn blew away and we were out there. It will take at the least a few years to get anything growing decent again out there. That means shortly in the early spring, I'm going to have to pen the horses up and keep them off of it for most of the time. I hate doing that.

:) They are on an island.

I don't know about fire in your part of the country but I've watched it get so hot here that trees explode before it gets to them. If you get anything headed your way, if I was you, I'd put sprinklers on the roofs of all the buildings, load up the animals and leave.

I figure I should have never watched the movie "Day After Tommorrow". I've just about decided we are in the middle of another ice age or a pole shift. Seems like it's been a year of really crazy weather all over.

If you were in a fire line, even though your property might not burn, I would think you would still need to leave just from smoke

Yeah. I'm hoping there aren't any injuries. The kids were in school already.

Well, it'd have to be a hot fire that engulfed the crowns of the trees. Lets just hope you never find out.

Yes, the smoke and heat and blowing ash gets really bad. I'm afraid of fire so I opt to leave if it gets close by. It moves so fast here with the wind that it doesn't take long to outrun you.

I don't know if it's true or not but someone reported that there were two tornados that collided and forked, missing some schools.

It's so funny when we first moved out here, before things got real populated, in the spring everyone burned off their properties, and more often then not the whole area would catch and burn off. No one ever got to excited about it. We'd all be around when our own properties burned just to make sure houses were safe, but on the whole most of us just stood back and watched it go.

Then once more and more people moved out here and we got trash service, people quit burning. I scared the newbies, and they'd call the fire dept. Well we went quit a few years with no fire. Then one spring one got started and it really was bad because there was so much under brush and dead grass from so many years. NOW, more people are buring again in the springs. Like I did last year, and people aren't so quick to call the FD.

I can see that it's needed, and that really, it's hard to set the trees on fire from the ground if you tried... It still made me a little nervous to see your burn :~D
