The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey, great picture, and welcome to the thread:) We like new people and their stories, experiences, and pictures, especially pictures.

Here's a picture of me and my gelding, Harley, last summer getting ready to do a vet check at one of the rides I go to.

I hope to really start doing a lot more riding this coming week to get ready for next season. I'm "planning" on riding every chance I get the rest of the winter depending on the weather.

I am fortunate to live where I can walk out my front door, saddle up and have probably 20 miles of trails to ride. I compete in Competitive Trail riding. What kind of Western riding are you doing, shows, rodeo events, trail, etc?

Becky

A little hawk like that? That'd be gutsy.

Heh... we've sure thought my brother's cat was at risk at the beach house where the bald eagles roam, they're big enough to fly off with a cat. :~D

Were you the one that posted the pics of the cat's close encouter with a bald eagle? The eagle was on the porch and the cat was practically nose to nose with it. Maybe it was someone else.

I seem to recall such a picture, but it wasn't our cat or our eagle. I posted pics of our eagle, down on the dock. No cat :~D

It wasn't that big of a deal to switch and I had been considering doing it just to be able to put a lighter weight saddle on my horse since I go such long distances. The only thing about the switch that has been hard for me is keeping my feet more under me then out in front which is where I was taught to keep my feet when doing barrels. I did that on my last ride last summer and it really sored my poor horse up in his back haveing my butt riding to far back:) But I think I'm getting better, we'll see, when I really start putting miles on him again next spring.

I guess I should say I'd prefer western, but I also have to say that I think my horse looks really really great in the English. More refined:), but I may be a bit prejudice too.

I forgot to tell you, if you want to receive a "good morning" ping most mornings to this thread just let Miss Targets know. She pings everyone in the mornings to keep the thread current on everyones comment page.

How often do you take lessons? do you get to ride any on your own, or just for lessons?

Those are really neat looking birds.

I had a Sharp-shinned hawk hit my patio door a week or so ago. He hit it hard and it killed him. They're not nearly as big as the red tailed hawks, but it was still a neat looking bird. I was sorry he killed himself.

Good luck with him. We found a baby redtailed hawk one time in the parking lot of our church. I was there working on the garden and it was jumping around on the ground. We caught it and made some calls, but the zoo nor any vets would take him. They all said turn it loose, it will make it or it won't. I guess they're too common to worry about:(

Ok, I found a guy that rehabs hawks and this is what he told me: I emailed him the same picture I posted, he emailed me back and said it's a female American Kestrel, which is actually a falcon. He told me to keep it in the dog cage overnight, offer him some water at his beak but don't leave it in the cage, he'll just turn it over and make a mess. If he can't fly away by tomorrow, bring it to him. He's kind of a long way away but if the bird isn't better, we're taking it over there. Really nice man.

Sorry, I thought it looked like a red tailed.

Well that's great you found someone to take her.

Goodness, don't be sorry, I thought it was a red tailed hawk as well. Never in a million years did I think falcon.

That is so cool. I'm glad you have a place to take her to if necessary.

Lost our power but we're up and running again. Wind is gusting here but not nearly that bad. Probably closer to 30-40 tops. Bad but not roof lfting yet :)

Just trail, for pleasure

I envy you that you live somewhere that affords you the riding trails and the privacy
However someday in the very near future I plan to also!

What kind of horse is Harley, he looks sweet!

I take lessons once a week from a very nice young couple.

They board,train & give lessons

They have about 30 horses now of various breeds

They give Dressage, Hunt & Western lessons

My horse, Missy, that I take lessons on is about 14
Shes's pretty Phlegmatic!

They show Paint Horses
They have a really pretty Paint named Lilly who is about 4 that they show

She is sweet and takes treats so softly however Missy doesn't like to share
and wants all the treats to herself!
