The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I recieved an interesting cataloge in the mail yesterday. You all maybe have heard of it. It's to order garden seed from. Vegetable or flower.

I've been looking at their web site, and you can order grass seed from them too. I was wondering if anyone would know if the prices were reasonable.

You can order 50lbs of mixed grass seed for pasture for $115.

The website is www.rhshumway.com.

Rose, in the cataloge I got there were some seeds for rare plants, and some of them were English. I thought you might enjoy looking.

I ordered about $50 worth of flower seed....I know it's early but I'm already planning my garden.

There was a guy walking around trying to do something, but it was too distant to tell if he was the owner or even knowledgeable about how to catch them. For certain, the poor beasts didn't seem like they wanted to be caught. I remember the time the horse was loose here and running down the street. Lots of people trying to help, but chasing it was ~not~ helping.

I showed up with grain, and a halter to catch the thing with if he did let me near... and the horse came right too me like "finally, somebody I can relate to! These other people just keep chasing me!"

That always seems to be the first thing people want to do with a loose horse, Chase.

I honestly don't remember how much we paid for the bag of pasture seed we bought, but I don't think it was near that much. It was a 'horse forage mix'

On the website it says you should sow 20lbs per acre.

When you say it wasn't near that much, are you talking price of it or amount you bought or both?

I was thinking about this post. Surely if someone was there filming it, they got them rescued. I wouldn't think they'd stand there and watch horses burn....

I think it was a 40 or fifty pound bag that we bought, I just don't think we paid near that much for it... But I can't be more helpful because I can't remember ;~D

I'd check the price at your local feed store and see if it's in the ball park.

I hope so, but horses can be hard to save if they won't settle down.

Times like that shows how trained and trusting your horse is I guess.

Yeah - it certainly helps if they're trusting and easy to catch. Only a third of ours here are, but that number goes to 100% if you have grain. :~D

Everywhere that I've read about horses and fire, the owners have covered their eyes. About the grain though, I will not give it until we are out of the pasture. I'll just stop and wait or walk slowly behind them. I want them to know that good things might be on the other side of the fence:')

Well, equally important, in your setting, you don't want to get mobbed by the rest of the herd. Walking out there with a bucket of grain might be dangerous ;~D

Poor horse. Fox says he was in a barn and seriously burnt.

Good Morning.

My hard drive crashed on my pc at home. :( Fired it up last night, and blue screen. After waiting on the phone with Dell for a half hour, we did a test and that is what they determined. Good thing it is still under warranty. They are suppose to send someone out today or Tuesday. Why do things always have to happen on Holidays! I tried to set my other pc up, but it has a reinstall lately, and the hardware for the modem was not loaded. So, I could hook it up online. Talk about going into with drawl. I just hope I do not lose everything on the new one.

If I am not back online this weekend. I wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Gasp! I'm a calm person, but computer crashes for me are like taking away my very air :~D

I'm impressed with Dell, they did good warranty work for me, I hope your stuff is savable.

How will you survive this weekend?:') I'm going to go see my Dad today. I'm waiting for his favorite BBQ place to open up though so I can take him some beans and banana pudding.

Happy New Year to you too:).

Sorry about your computer.

We are suppose to be at 75 by Sun. and 76 Tues:)...

New Years Eve we will just hang here, Jenny will be here with us, her husband has to work that night. I think we are going to watch Polar Express. We've never seen it, Blake got it for Christmas. Today I'm going to finish getting Christmas decorations down, and ride this afternoon.
