This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Talked to Bob last night about possible trips this summer with him to some farther away places. Some trips sound like alot of fun.
We also talked about your possible trip up here, and though I still hope we can borrow Tiff's chestnut QH that ecurbh's on in my profile... he said we definately could borrow his appy Kai if that didn't work out. Remember him? He's the one that I think Mack said "There's an ass for every seat" about. Not pretty, but a good stout experienced trail horse.
I'm still hoping for the QH "Kat" though. :~D
Well, I'm still hoping I can make it. I've started saving money:). I guess I should look into what a plane ticket will cost, I sure hope there is a straight shot, changing planes scares me if I'm by myself. Never done it. I've only flown twice, and Mack was with me both times and we had no changes to make.

Right now I really don't see any reason why I couldn't make it. But it's still 7 months away and anything can happen I guess...How far ahead would it be good to make reservations?

I just picked the week of 7/10-17 as an option and got these options and prices... unfortunately all are plane change in Denver. Orbitz: Flight Search Results 7/10-17
I put in some dates the weeks prior to that and after, and I'm getting ~about~ the same results.
The plane change is not as bad as it sounds if you are at the same airline. I wouldn't pick the one that switches carriers. The gates for each airline are all in the same wing, you don't have to go back out through security, and it's kindof nice to get up and stretch your legs a little. If the layover time is about an hour, not too much more or less, it's not too bad.

I keep replaying in my head this debate I got into with Bob last night. Now, Bob is the personification of the role of 'small town southern sherrif'. He loves to talk, tells a great story, and has a lot of opinions.
Well, last night we were talking about horse camps and horse trails within driving distance that ecurbh and I could get to with our truck and horse trailer. To keep in mind is that since our truck is just a half ton, that we want to be careful about trying to pull a full horse trailer into anyplace too mountainous that has a lot of serious climbing. We don't want to burn up the truck.
So we're talking, and he's talking about places and he says "That truck can pull that horse trailer anywhere - isn't it 4 wheel drive?" and I say "Well, yeah, but how does that help on the road? If it's hard dry pavement, you can't use 4WD." I know it helps to put it in 4WD on gravel where it's a climb, but the place we were talking about is paved.
He looks at me like I'm just a silly stoopid gurl and laughs and says "Nonsense... you put that truck in 4WD and let all four wheels pull you and you can climb any hill"... he goes on to say that he puts his (1 ton) truck in 4WD all the time when climbing grades like to go over the mountain passes... even when it's dry. He says stuff like "What do you mean you can't put it in 4WD on pavement? Who told you THAT?"
Well I look at him just gobsmacked. Every 4WD I've ever owned has warnings printed clearly, often on the visor that says "don't operate in 4WD on hard dry surfaces". Furthermore, I've tried it. I've forgotten and left the 4WD engaged and it not only makes grinding noises, it will literally try to 'hop' around corners because the wheels are all locked into turning at the same speed. It's not good to drive in 4WD unless the tires can slip. And I know I'm right on this, but Bob won't listen, he thinks he knows a lot more about this than I do. Furthermore, I know that 4WD gives you more traction, but it doesn't give you any more pulling "power".
So I leave knowing he thinks I'm an idiot on this, but I know I'm right, and that's really frustrating my ego.
PART-TIME 4WD
This is the most basic system; it operates after a driver either moves a shift lever or presses a button inside the vehicle.Otherwise, the part-time four-wheel-drive vehicle travels in two-wheel-drive mode; typically in these cases, the power that's moving the vehicle is sent to the two rear wheels and the two front wheels are pushed along.
When a driver shifts from two- to four-wheel drive in a vehicle with part-time four-wheel drive, he or she locks together the front and rear axles, so the front and rear wheels rotate at the same speed. This improves straight-line traction.
Since the part-time system has no center differential, there is no way for the two axles to rotate at different speeds in a corner. So, part-time systems shouldn't be engaged unless the vehicle is on very slippery road conditions such as deep snow and mud where wheels can slip as necessary for turning.
If you try driving one of these vehicles on dry pavement with four-wheel drive activated, you will likely feel an awkward, binding sense as you turn a corner. It's also possible to damage drive system components on these vehicles and cause premature tire wear if you travel in four-wheel drive on dry pavement.
It sure will. When I went to Tenn last spring, the cabin was waaaaay up a mountain. The road was very steep, and on one particular hair pin curve, we had to put in 4 wheel drive. Only because the the road was wet and some gravel had washed on the road.
As far as using it to pull up a steep grade...don't do it! Good way to tear it up. If the hill is that steep, it's better to get a running start. That is what I do when I pull my fifth wheel. That is why they put the tow/haul button on your gear shift. For towing. Your transmission will be noiser, but that is what it's made for. You buddy Bob, is wrong on this one.
LOL...people set in their ways are better left in their ways:) Best way to handle people like that is just smile and nod then do what you want.

Your Bob reminds me exactly of someone I know. The locals in his hometown call him the Mayor, because he has an opinion or solution to everything, regardless of whether he's right or wrong. In fact, I'm wondering if it's the same guy going about with a different name! ;-) I agree with Becky. Smile and nod, and just go about your merry way. Egos are secondary in these cases. :-) If he gives you lip again, show him the manual.
