This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Remember the stretching exercises I learned at the clinic last summer. I put a stop to that real fast. One, anytime I put my hands anywhere like I was asking him to do a stretch he'd start looking for a treat, and two, when I picked up his feet to clean them, he immediately went into a stretch even when I was ready or in postion to do it and I'd almost get steped on or have my knee racked with his hoof.
The exercises were good, but they also created some negative habits, that I don't want to deal with. I do stretching now by just riding slow and making sure he is good and warmed up before doing anything else.
Those exercises were the only time I ever did give treats. Treats IMO, just cause too much trouble. And, my horses are fat enough, I'm having trouble this winter, keeping them trim. Harley looks like a blimp, and I've eve slowly been cutting back his feed.

Doggoneit!!! I just talked to my farrier...I wrote the date down wrong, he's not scheduled to come till NEXT Tues. He's going to call me back in a bit, he was shoeing, to let me know if he could come sometime this week since Harley is missing a shoe, but I'm pretty sure riding is out today....I'm trying to figure a way to go anyway, but I hate doing it with him missing that shoe, but I hate missing such a good day to ride, and I have Julia coming too, I'd have to call and cancel....sigh....What to do....

I don't know a lot about it... but I think that Parelli method uses treats too.
With one horse at a time, giving a treat for no real reason, or after riding, or after something unpleasant like worming, is OK... where it gets bad is if you have the horse thinking only about the treat and where it is, and they start to nosing and lipping at you for it.
My trainer was very strict about a rule that "you can always touch the horse, but the horse can never touch you". That was a vital rule for me to have with my stallion, who had to have those kind of rules, or a stallion will take a mile if you give an inch. Our Cyn tends to be pushy, and we have to be careful with her. Bay is a little bit different in a way I hope you can see if you come (:~D)... he makes a big production out of getting a face rub, but I don't like being around him if he knows I have a treat in my pocket either... it changes his motivation from being about me, to being all about the treat.
It's all a balance. We want them to like us, but they can't ever be allowed to push us. And they ALL will, if you let them.
Can you ride Rocky today? Or did you pull all his shoes?
I wouldn't take Harley out without at least those boots on. Will he tolerate wearing those on his fronts?

WEll DuH!!! I forgot about my boots. Yeah, I can use one of those. Julia never wants to do more then walk, and that's all I'd want to do today anyway, he's gotten so soft. Thanks for the reminder:)

I think if I was using the boots I'd put them on both sides so they are even... don't you think? I just think of myself walking with two different shoes on. It's hard to walk even.
But it looks like it doesn't matter, if the shoer's comin'. WOO HOO!
I dont' think the boots are any thicker then a shoe...If I put the boots on both fronts it would make him unlevel...I think:).

Hmm... so there's that... But they're heavier and kinda bulky too, so there's that.

We're gonna make up a trail first aid kit that can stay in my new saddle bags, so nothing big or too heavy... I'm thinking what would be good, for either horse or human, is a couple gauze large gauze pads for a cut, and a couple rolls of vet wrap... an antibiotic spray and maybe some injectible Bute and a syringe. I'm thinking for most solveable injuries, that will get us back to the truck. Anything else you would want with you?

Sounds good other then I've come to believe that Banimine is a better pain reliever then Bute...works faster anyway...at least on colic, maybe that's the only kind of pain it works on????

I'll ask the vet. I was thinking Bute was about the only option... and though ours aren't the type to lock up, I was thinking of Bute to fix that if we came upon someone in that kind of dire straits. Or to give to keep down swelling of an injury so they could get back.
I should also ask the vet if we should carry paste or injectible. I'm not good with needles... but I think needles are needed if the situation is dire.
I've never really used injectable Bute, maybe it would work as well as Banimine.
I know when a horse ties up the worst thing you can do is move them. But I don't know if that is the rule also after they have been medicated???
I like giving any meds with a needle. The luck I have the horse always lands up spitting some out, and then your not sure how much they have had. With pain meds the amount you give is soooo small it really gets to be a guessing game of how much you've gotten in them just because some always sticks to the tube anyway.
