Good Morning.

Back to the work again. On a pleasant note, it is suppose to reach close to 50 today. Wow, it will feel like spring.

Hair, I can't wait to get home and see your new tack. A gift certificate was nice. Before my daughter started to work at a tack shop, it was easy buying for her. Now, I have a hard time choosing a gift.

We have actually talked about that. I don't want to spill too much here cause I'll let her look at this thread, but maybe soon we'll do it. She has a friend who takes riding lessons. I'm thinking it might be something to do this summer for sure.

70? Seventy? That's not an appropriate temperature for December at all! :~D

We need some rain soooooo bad. We're under high fire danger because of the wind and low humidity. No rain in sight either.

Hey everyone. I'm back from being away, and it looks like I have a lot to catch up on. Hair, thanks for the wonderful Christmas card post. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. It was a horsey Christmas for me. I got a pair of riding sneakers by Ariat. I have to return them for a different size however, go figure. I wouldn't be able to try them out until after new years anyway. And my mom had a really neat ring made for me, cast from a horseshoe nail. It's very interesting. (And heavy)

First welcome to the thread:)

Second, please don't think I am being preachy here, or talking down to you, but I just want to pass on a word of warning. Horses are NOTHING like dogs. They can be gentle and seem affectionate, but treating them like puppy dogs can start alot of bad habits in horses.

We routinely have discussions here about the pros and cons giving treats, treatment of horses, etc. There are strong opinions on those types of things:)....LOL....but as a beginner I suggest you err on the side of caution when handling any horse. They can very easily be turned in to spoiled brats, even the best of them. BUT:) this is JMO:)

Other then that, I hope you and your daughter can get some good lessons soon. I think all kids should have the responsibility of a horse at least for a short time in their growing up years. Lots of good lessons in them:)

I posted my last post at the exact second you post yours, but yours was first on the board, but it showed up after mine on my comments page:) I've never seen that happen before.

OH, glad to have you back:)

And... having a horse delays a young girl from thinking about boys too much :~D At least that was the line of argument my mom used with my dad!

Yes -- we do know that. And we have cautioned her AND we do not allow her there without adult spervision. The owners don't spoil the horses -- but they allow her to carrot them on weekends. We have allowed them to ride their horses on the trails on our property for years. They take my daughter with them on occasion in return. It's a nice arrangement. :o)

And I agree about frequent treats... If we get something here like a bag of carrots that we sometimes get (we often bring out a bag of carrots when we have company over, just so the horses will show enough interest in the visitors to let them pet them over the gate) the horses are polite for the first day of it, and maybe for the second day of it, but beyond that, by about the third day they are so pushy we say "No more treats for awhile!"

The last place you want to be in is in the middle of three spoiled horses who all think you have something in your pocket.

My dad was always worried that I'd get hurt by them, but I think he viewed boys as even more dangerous, so horses it was :~D

And it did work. I couldn't get into too much trouble out riding around if I had to have one hand holding on to the horse at all times :~D
