The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Your barn turned out really nice - Mack did a great job.

It appears we are celebrating a week of Christmas. Last night with my son and daughter-in-law, tonight with them again and a young man we watched grow up who is home on leave from the Marines. Friday night with Bob's son, DIL and our grandson. Then Sunday morning with niece and family.

I got my Christmas miracle today. Bob took two of the mares to the vet to be checked prior to breeding in the spring. One of them, Tuffy's mom, was bred last year to Sonny but three vets over two appointments confirmed she'd slipped the foal. I was really disappointed at the time. Anyway, today the vet's asked Bob to leave her overnight, that she either had a massive infection or was pregnant. They called a couple hours later for him to come get her. They palpated and confirmed pregnancy. :)

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and miracles galore.

Good Morning.

Duchess,
but three vets over two appointments confirmed she'd slipped the foal.

Wow, that is something. Congratulations!

'Tis the busy season.

Morning everyone :)

Yes, very busy here. House full of people and at work, people on vacation or resigning to take offers of once in a life time type jobs. Really great for them but sad and stressful for those of us trying to fill the gap.

I am so very happy about Farah, we just don't know when she's due :) We bred her the first part of April, had her confirmed in foal, then told she had absorbed the foal, bred her again the first of July, at pregnancy check we were told no pregnancy, two cysts but no need to remove. Then another vet couldn't find the cysts but said she would need to be checked before breeding again to have them removed.

Soooo - foal in March or June I guess :)

That is so weird (and wonderful) about the mystery pregnancy! How did the 3 vets check her before? Did they ultrasound or just palpate?

Hi Hair!

I'm getting ready to leave work early for the holidays and will be on vacation all next week so you might not hear from me for a while. I may check in from home but I may not. As 2J says, "Expect me when you see me". Y'all have a great Christmas and New Years and I'll see ya next year!

As she gets closer, lets hope we can narrow it down a bit :~D

she was previously ultra sounded (?). This last time, ultrasound and then palpate. The ultrasound was inconclusive but palpating the vet touched the foal who wasn't thrilled about it.

Yep, that would be nice. She bags up about three weeks early though, so we will just keep a close watch on her.

Merry Christmas Frog:) Have a great vacation.

Mack and I have been moving panels again:) Mack has always thought we needed to make a fully enclosed work out pen. I didn't care one way or the other, the reason I took the old arena down was so I could use the panels on the perimeter. So today we we redid it so that now I have an arena about 1/2 the size of the old one. It does look alot better like this then it did. And now I have a place to put horses too in case the barn blows down:). Hard to see in a picture but here it is. It's almost more of an extra extra large round pen. Great to work a horse in, but not really big enough to run barrels. Fits my needs perfectly.

It's like a big lincoln log set, you can move it around as much as you like!

I have posts in the ground, and I'm committed to one layout :~D

Yes, you can move them, but after a few times, you wish you were committed to one way so you wouldn't be tempted to start:)

Oh - it looks kinda fun! I spent coutless hours as a kid setting up my play corrals and fences for my Breyer horses in the living room.

You're just like a big version of that :~D

Yeah, it was a challenge to set them up in the most useable way, and not have any panels left over. We did pretty good. We were left with one 16 footer, and one ten footer, and 2 gates, that really weren't all that useable anyway because part of them was broke. We figured it up, that the panels are 13 years old, and only one of them (the one Harley climbe:) had to be trashed. So they have lasted pretty good, altho they are looking a bit worn, but still have alot of service in them:)

And even the ones that are banged up, I suppose could be painted, but I think that idea would lose it's luster after the first one... those pipes would be a real pain to paint.

They seems expensive when you're like me and don't have any and would have to buy a bunch, but they're a good investment and handy to have.

These have been painted once, it is a tedious job, luckily for us it was done when we had a crew we had to keep working during one winter, and they didn't seem to mind doing it.

It was pretty expensive when we bought the bulk of them when we put in the arena. But it would have been just as much to have to have the fence built. With the rock we have it's hard to get anyone who is willing to do it anyway. We needed fence that was cow safe. We got 5 steer so Charlie could rope, and Jenny and some of the neighborhood girls team penned them:) The arena got alot of use when the kids were home so it was worth it.

Mack just came in and I asked him about what we paid for the arena, I couldn't remember. 13 years ago it was $2000. We got a discount since we bought so many at one time. He also said and it makes sense, if he had to do it again he wouldn't buy the 16 footer. The shorter ones are sturdier, and if a horse tears one end of a 16 footer you've lost the whole 16 foot.
