The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning!

We have an ice storm here . . . lots of people with power out. But we didn't get much ice right in our neighborhood - apparently the river acts as a bit of a buffer and moderates the cold. We were hovering right at 32 and didn't get any ice to speak of on the trees and our power has not even flickered (we're ready if it does).

But my son goes to school a good ways north of here, about 20 miles up GA Highway 400 due north and slightly east of town and west of I-85. That quadrant always gets the worst cold around here, and sure enough as we crossed the river the trees were full of ice and heads hanging low. My son and one other kid from our neighborhood were going "Oh, boy!" as we pulled up the hill and all the traffic lights were out. One of the teachers was standing in the driveway with an umbrella and a blanket around him. The kids were going, "Oh, boy! Oh, boy!"

He said, "The middle school has no power . . . but the high school DOES so you boys go on in." "Oh, )(*&(&^^%$" said the boys. (The school is kind of spread along a ridge above GA 400, and the front buildings take their power off the access road which had no power . . . but the rear buildings have a power line that runs straight up the hill from GA 400. So not much likelihood of their losing power, ever. But I didn't tell the boys that . . . )

I'm going to put on my Lab's cute little camouflage neoprene vest and take her for a walk in a minute. What she really needs is a little neoprene hood like a horse's . . . she HATES to get her ears wet!

One of my cats used to get those zits on his chin.

It comes from not washing after you eat!

If you can catch them at the blackhead stage, put warm wet compresses on them, and then gently pull the blackheads off (I used a small thin piece of plastic card, but if you have fingernails (I don't) that should work), you can avoid the red infected stage.

I got in the habit of washing Mackie's chin with warm water and PhisoDex once a week as a preventative. Worked really well. He finally got used to it, but for awhile there he would RUN and HIDE whenever he heard water running.

Good morning. Cold here this morning, the bird bath was frozen. LOL, that's how I've started telling how cold it is out there.

I went to bed at 8 last night, but was awakened around 10 by strange noises that seemed to be coming from behind our shop, which is by the gate into Harleys' pasture. I got up and listened at the window, and could definitly hear voices, and it sounded like someone was telling someone else to "get him up" and making strange hollering sounds. The last thing I heard was I swear somone hollered my name.

I got Mack up who was asleep too, and he went out and patrolled but never saw anyone....Really strange.

Good morning... it's not so much zits as it is a generalized infection now... the whole thing just got meaty all of the sudden. But it's already drying up. I can see that it might have something to do with dirty eating or the bowl or something.

I don't know. It all stopped so quick, of course just when Mack was heading out there, that I wondered if I was dreaming, or if the neighbors who built the big house next door were out. But I don't think they know my name, and why holler it anyway!!!????? I truely don't know what/who it was.

Good morning all. Haven't been here much, but today is Christmas Candy day. Got to make up packages. My Miss Accident-Prone Thoroughbred has had a lump under her jaw since June --- it goes down and comes back up again. Swollen lymph gland, does not respond to anitbiotics. This in addition to her terrible wire cut which has now healed. Heree she is in her better days a few years ago. A most affectionate hug-loving horse. Now the vet says she may have lymphoma. She's 22. This doesn't look good.

I'm so sorry... but you don't have to lose hope. I know a 28 year old horse who has been living with a swollen and rather unsightly, yet painless swollen lymph gland for years.

I'm glad y'all didn't lose power! I hate ice storms and that's all we ever seem to get over here in NW AL. We've been lucky for the last few years though and haven't had one. We just got lots of rain yesterday and last night.

That's funny about the boys thinking they were going to get out of school. I know how they feel. Every time they think it might snow over here I find myself wishing that it would so I wouldn't have to go to work. My only problem is that we don't get free snow days like we used to at school so it ends up costing me a vacation day. Bummer!

I never heard of a Lab that didn't like to get wet. Poor girl!

Well I'm glad Mac didn't find anything! Even if you were just dreaming, I'd rather it be that than some strange hollering people really out there in the shop. Confronting people like that can get you killed, coz you never know if they're hyped up on something or are just plain mean. But I'd do an inventory in the light of day to see if anything's missing. Didn't y'all have some stuff stolen not too long ago?

I hate to hear that about your mare, but hopefully she'll be like the horse that Hair knows and she'll have lots of good years to come. That's what we'll pray for anyways! Great picture too!

My daughter's birthday was yesterday. This is what I got for her. I love bronze, and wish I could afford a real nice Remington, but this one was really neat. The flower arrangment was a gift from our Christmas party last Saturday.
