The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

OK then, I won't turn the computer off just yet. I had come in to shut down for the night. It's almost time for Desperate Housewives, and Greys Anatomy, then bed.

Here's ecurbh and Ramius putting up the outside lights around the lower deck railing... never did take any more once it got dark! :~\

This is Dona's small red and white tree she always does. It's by the kitchen

And here's the 'main tree' all lit up, and the mantel behind.

Looks beautiful:) I really like the mantel. I set some stuff up on the top of the entertainment center, I don't have a fireplace, but I want to get some garland to put around the stuff up there . If I get it all done tomorrow, I'll take some pictures. Right now it's kind of plain looking. I also have to get a tree skirt. I always buy those cheapy white sparkely ones, but I have to get new ones every year because my cat always eats holes in them. I can't figure out what it is about them he likes so much, but sometime thru the Christmas season he'll eat a hole in them. I put one under the village too. Crazy cat. Thank goodness it's never make him sick before.

Oh and the red and white tree is neat too.

I bet the lights on the deck are really neat against the water.

Sorry for the multiple posts but I meant to say, "I can't believe how green the grass still is there". Haven't you been have cold weather? Is that special grass that can handle the cold?

The mantle's easy, just throw christmas lights in a pile and stick some greens in it :~D

The grass stays green all winter but it's dormant and stops growing... the beach house grass doesn't look as beat up as ours here gets in winter, with all the dog and horse and people traffic trodding on it.

I found a picture I took last year of the outside lights... folk on the water decorate more for the people across the water than they do for the traffic on the road side :~D

Oh that is beautiful:)

My mom and dad had a house on Grand Lake here in OK. I remember the lights at christmas there. They're so pretty for a boat.

We do get boats going by at night this time of year, people looking at the lights :~D

One year we went all out and set up my bother's sailboat on the dock, with white lights for the sail and green lights for the mast and red lights on the hull of the boat. That was fun... haven't gone that all out since, but we talk about it. :~D

Good night... we're gonna hit the couch and soon to bed :~D

Oh - between your special ornaments your mom made and the tree skirt conversation, I should take a picture of the tree skirt we have that I love... My mom made it when we were little, it's green felt, with Santa and a sleigh and reindeer all cut out of felt and glued on... it's really worn and tattered looking now, and from a stranger's standpoint, tacky as heck probably, but I can't imagine using anything else :~D

Fellow Ohioans, we can relate to this.

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy on Ohio:

You may be from Ohio (pronounced ah-hi-uh) if:

You think all Pro football teams are supposed to wear orange!

You know all the 4 seasons: winter, still winter, almost winter and construction.

You live less than 30 miles from some college or university.

You know what a buckeye really is, and have a recipe for candy ones.

"Toward the lake" means "north" and "toward the river" means south."

You know if other Ohioans are from southern or northern Ohio as soon as they open their mouths.

You can spell words like Cuyahoga, Olentangy, Bellefontaine,Tuscarawas,Wapakoneta and you know which letter is doubled in Cincinnati!

"Vacation" means spending a day at Cedar Point in the summer and deer hunting in the fall.

You measure distance in minutes.

Your school classes were canceled because of cold.

Your school classes were canceled because of heat.

You've had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

You know what should be knee-high by the Fourth of July.

You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example:
"Where's my coat at?"

This is a great one.....You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You think of the major four food groups as beef, pork, and Jell-O salad with marshmallows.

You carry jumper cables in your car.

You know what 'pop' is.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

You think sexy lingerie is tube socks and a flannel nightgown.

The local paper covers national and international headlines on one page but requires 6 pages for sports.

Congratulations!!! I remember when I was first learning dressage. First Level seemed so hard and I thought I'd never get there either.

I just got back from Houston last night. The Spanish Riding School had their last performance of their 2005 USA tour there, and I went with some friends. We had the best time. The SRS horses and riders are just about the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. They were sheer perfection. The final, an 8-horse quadrille, was absolutely breathtaking in its precision. Every one of those guys were over 6 feet tall with long long legs and seats to die for.

That is what you get when you do nothing but get lunged and ride for years.

Dressage is addicting!!

You have a good teacher. I thought I could ride until I starting dressage. Your current teacher did the right thing with you although you couldn't know it at the time. But, now having made progress, you can see why it was necessary.

Keep riding the schoolmaster as he will teach you well. It is at least twice as hard learning to ride dressage if you are also at the same time trying to teach the horse.

I have a 3rd level schoolmaster myself who would be 4th level if he wasn't flying change challenged. He usually manages the single for 3rd, but doing tempis just blows his little mind. He is the kind of horse who is always sure that his legs won't work right and he will fall down. Once he gets confident in the movement, he will be fine though.

Keep up the hard work and before you know it, you will be riding second level. And, don't get too discouraged at 2nd. It is nearly as difficult as PSG! But, once you get the hang of the collection and get practiced, you are well on your way to FEI. All your basics as a rider will then be in place!

Glad to hear that Harley is feeling better. I am very lucky that my guys drink even when the water is icy. They will stand by the water trough and give me that sad look that tells me I need to come break ice for them. If it is only a little frozen over, Jake will break it himself with his nose.

You are already doing one good thing to get more water into him by wetting his feed. You can also add some salt or electrolytes to get him to drink more. And, taking out a warm bucket or 2 of water during the day also helps.

To guesstimate how much he is drinking (if you are watching), count the number of times he swallows. About 12 swallows is a gallon of water.

I lost a horse early last spring to colic because he wouldn't drink enough water. Unfortunately, he had rolled around during the night and caused a splenic entrapment.
