This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It was! It was a usual heavy snowstorm when it started, but after the rain band passed, it was supposed to keep raining, but it didn't and instead went right back to snow.
LOL (she thinks I'm a whackjob now, but she's polite!)
I will! I was going to take pictures when it got really crazy, but it was so uncomfortable being out there that I decided on self preservation instead. ;-) I'm supposedly riding tomorrow, but we'll see how that goes. I'd say we got about 5 inches.
Well, I'm outta here. I've got an appointment with the vet tomorrow morning to have the blood type kit drawn on little Miss Ellie for her registration, have Bluebell pregnancy checked again (she's just not looking as "fat" as Truly is), have Grace's wolf teeth removed and have Tennessee's goober checked to see if that ulcer he had on it a month or so ago has gone away. It's supposed to be colder'n blue blazes too so it should be a fun morning. I plan to trailer them there so I'll have to do it in two shifts but it's only about 5 miles so it's not that bad. Wish me luck that Tennessee will get back in the trailer better this time! See y'all!
I remember hearing/seeing thunder and lightening one time with snow. I was a kid probably about 5th grade. We got more snow that storm then any I've ever seen. A little over 2 feet. It was cool. I guess that's why I remember it. Once the storm was over it wasn't that cold to go out but with that much snow it lasted for awhile and we got to play in it, make forts, snowmen go sleding. We were out of school for like 3 days, no electric for 2 days. Seemed like a real treat:)

That's a lot of vetting in one day! Hope it all goes smoothly and well :~D
Good morning all. Not too much going on around here. Same old cold, cloudy day. Work is having a Christmas party tonight, so it will be nice to get out for a good meal on someone's else dime.
Well that's a good attitude :~D I usually dread the office Christmas party. I've only worked with one group of people in my career that I really wanted to spend a minute of my free time with :~D
I abolsutely hate work Christmas parties:') They are staffing nightmares. My boss out of town and last night no exception. I was ready to go anyway though.
Just got back from the stables, removing blankets and now cooking breakfast. We haven't eaten out one time this week. Amazing (grin)
My boss is a wonderful man, the best I ever worked for. The rest of the crew are all decent people. It will be a small group, less then 20. We just have some cocktails before and dinner after. Nice and quiet. My friend could not make it, so I am taking my daughter.
Good Morning to you all:)
Well, I had an emergency last night. Harley coliced (sp). We got him thru it, but it was midnight by the time it passed.
Could have had 2 causes, not enough water, or the hay I've been feeding him for warmth. Which IMO, neither makes sense, but I don't think a vet would even be able to tell us. While he was out yesterday, I hauled and he drank what I thought seemed like a substanial amount of water, I gave him water till he quite drinking, and I've only been giving each horse not even 1 whole flake of hay at a time. It's very green hay, looks very rich, so I didn't want to overdue them.
Last night when I went out to feed at 9:30 he was down:(. We walked him awhile, then loaded him in the trailer and took him on a ride. He pooped twice. We thought that a good sign. We got back and he immediately started the laying down and getting up again. He wasn't rolling, just getting up and laying down. He did that for about 15 min. So we loaded him back up and took him on another ride and he pooped 3 more times. We came back, and from then on he seemed fine. The poop wasn't as moist as it should have been, but it wasn't dry either. When I broke it open with my hand you could still feel moisture in it. So I'm not sure what happened.
You know I've had a gut feeling for the last few days this was going to happen. I don't know why, but I just felt it was coming.
First thing Mon. I'm going to go get some Banimine to have on hand, and learn how to main line shots. I think that's all a vet would have done, because altho you knew he was colicy, it wasn't bad. I just didn't want it to escalate into a bad one.
This morning, he got his feed with warm water poured on it again. I hadn't been doing that everytime because I thought he was drinking enough, and because it worries me the way it swells. I know you said that was OK, but it still worries me:), He seems fine this morning. He did start eating, but I haven't been out there to see if he ate it all.
Becky
I meant to include: I also wondered if keeping him in that small pen (I think that's what's been worrying me) could have stressed him and caused this. I know anything out of the ordinary can upset their digestion. Just the way he'd been acting in that pen the last day seemed stressy, that's why I got him out yesterday for awhile.

Well good grief! It's common to colic when it's that cold, I know.... usually from lack of water, but I guess it could be that he ate the hay too fast or something...
Good idea with the trailer ride, I know that jiggling often gets the system working again...
In my experience with the mashes, they eat it slower wet than when it's dry... they seem to lip it instead of chomping big mouthfuls, so I think that helps, too.
It's been so long since I worked, that I don't know, but I don't think I'd enjoy a work party that much either.
We have been invited to a Christmas party next weekend down at the little hamburger resturant in Bixby. We know the owners and all the people who work there very well. I want to go, BUT, we are suppose to bring a white elephant gift...that's the part of these parties I hate. Those types of things make me uncomfortable.
Becky
Could be all the changes... the pen, the hay, frozen water and the extreme cold all happening at the same time.
It's good for them to lay down, as long as they don't roll. Weather changes, the wind storm, lots of things could trigger the colic. The bowel movements are a real good sign. I keep a tube of the Banamine on hand. When we first got Jody, she had colic a lot. You just never know what can set off the "tummy ache".
Hey, it got colder than I thought here. I'm cooking frozen eggs. Now that it's back to just my husband and myself here and the frig isn't opened every 5 minutes I guess I'm going to have to turn the temp up.
Well my first opinion would be lack of water over the hay thing. Just because of the way his poop looked. It was moist but not as much as usual.
We've heard numerous times to trailer a colic horse, unless they are really throwing themselves around. My biggest surprise was how easy he loaded especially the 2nd time. In the past he's been a slow loader, not bad, just slow. Last night he jumped right in both times. HHMMMMM, it just now dawned on me, Mack was behind him, I'm usually by myself, that might have been it.
He didn't eat his breakfast:(,,,I don't know if it's he doesn't like it wet (he ate them the other night like that), or if he's still not feeling well. He's not down. I'll give him a little while then feed him a little dry and see what happens. I don't think he's drank anything this morning either.
Dam horses,
Becky
