Thank God for small blessings then!
We got plenty of skunks, raccoons, possums, armadillos, you name it. I had a close encounter with a skunk in my barn one night last year. He wanted to come in for the catfood and I didn't want him to. It was really stupid on my part and it was a wonder I didn't get sprayed. Now THAT woulda been fun!
We've got possums... and raccoons. I read on another site, I think for conversation on this thread (or the HH) that possums aren't believed to ever carry rabies because their body temp is about a degree too cool to be a good host for it.
I wise I'd known that about 2 years ago! I found a nearly dead possum in one of the horse's stalls and I kinda freaked out. I had colts at the time so I took off work and carried it to the health dept to have them send it off to be tested. It turned out to not be rabid and the vet said it was probably distemper.
The biggest threat from possums is that they carry EPM. I've had 2 friends in this area who have had horses die from it, so I don't want no steenking possums around my barn!
I WISH I'd known...sheesh!
If you google opossoms and Rabies, you get hits that are at both sides of the question. I'm not quite sure why it isn't more known, and less speculative. Possoms are around here, so I'm lucky to have not seen them around my barn... or raccoons for that matter. I think the dogs being around, even if they're in the house at night, kindof keeps them, out of the compound.
Hey everyone. Busy day! It snowed like crazy today, really heavy, then turned to rain, then picked up back to snow, HEAVY snow, with 0 visibility and lots of wind. Did I mention thunder and lightening too? Crazy New England Weather.
I have never seen lightning with snow.... that has to be pretty weird indeed.
I saw the flash and then thought, Hmm that must be a truck... but quickly reconsidered once the crash of thunder hit. It went on like that for about an hour, some really good lightening and thunder too.
My sister's husband actually feeds them! They have horses too and I've told them about the EPM thing but he thinks he knows everything so I just leave it alone. He's an idiot anyways so I try not to argue with him. It's really hard though!
Feeds possums or raccoons?
I can see the appeal with raccoons, they're cute anyway... but possums just have no cuteness at all. They're not even cute as babies.
Wow, lightening in a snow storm. Cool! Really weird, but cool. I don't think I've ever heard of it either. It would really be cool at night, the flash on all that white snow.
It wasn't Northern Lights? You really heard thunder?
He feeds possums! This guy will take a spider outside rather than squash it. Like I say, he's an idiot.
We usually don't get Northern Lights this far down. It was really and truly thunder. :-) It happens sometimes, but very rarely. I've lived in this area all my life, and have never seen it happen before now.
It was a crazy storm. I had to go out in it, and you couldn't see beyond your nose. After a few minutes, my coat was caked with snow.
Oh dear... I take spiders outside :~D
That's really unusual. Obviously thunder is usually more associated with heat than snow. Must be quite a storm up there.
I'd have to go out in it too. We get snow so seldom around here that it's usually cause for celebration, but if it sticks around for very long it gets really old because we have no snow equipment and people don't know how to drive in it and drive like maniacs. Take us some pictures!
Yeah, but you have other redeeming qualities! ;o)
