The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We have got back up to low 40. I'm going to see what it's getting down to tonight before I go take the blankets off yet. My dog giving me a hard time though. She doesn't want to come in the house . She's been like this for about 2 weeks now. She used to love coming inside. I don't know what has scared her.

Well that doesn't surprise me about Cyn. You can tell by looking at her that she has bulked up.

Well it's warmed up a bit here today, enough that I got out there and ran some fake hot wire so I could let the two out for awhile. I could tell by just looking that Harley was getting stir crazy in that little pen. And it's suppose to warm up next week so I want to let him get rid of some of that craziness before I ride:)

I took a few pictures. Of course he went right to the piles of debris that is still out there and started sniffing around, and Rocky came straight to the panels and started acting studdy. But I figure I'll only let them out when I'm around to keep and eye on them.

It's hard to see in the picture but when Rocky is acting studdy he bows all up and throws himself up against the side of the panels. I've wondered if that is typical behavior in a stud???

That's pretty amazing about Cyn. Horses can really bulk up as they mature and it's not all just fat, it's their bones too. I was really surprised at how much Blade had filled out since I sold him. I had to put him on a diet while I had him coz he was a bit TOO bulky for his height.

I wish I had that problem:). My two bigger dogs want in so bad they can't stand it. After I figured out Nikki has gotten incontinent, I set them up in the back of my trailer with a heater at night. Seems to be working pretty good, but they still come to the patio door and sit there and look in and whine. And Susie won't go out unless I go with her. I have to watch her close in weather like this. She'll sneak off and potty in the house because she doesn't like snow, rain, or cold. Spoiled dog. She won't even go out with me sometime unless she thinks I'm leaving in the truck.

That neck posture is all studly, but slammin' the panels sideways like that is a new one. He looks cool, there's a presence to a stallion... you can ~see~ the testosterone radiating out from him. :~D

She'll always be relatively narrow... compared to QH types, but she's looking good. Heh... as skinny as she was, I'm not sure what we saw in her originally. Though I saw that she had a fairly unflappable temperament there at her home, we certainly didn't know she would turn out to be the complete gem that she is on trail. She was an impulse buy.... but a really super one.

...She used to love coming inside...

One of my cat's got that way for a while. I think it was because after one of my other cats got killed by a dog, I didn't let her out when ever she wanted like I used to and she was feeling trapped. She got to where she didn't want to come in and when she did, she was screaming to get back out almost immediatly. I went back to letting her out any time she wanted and she got over it. It didn't hurt that it got really cold and wet outside for a week or so, which made outside a lot less attractive. When I left for work this morning she was sleeping blissfully on the chest of drawers. Hopefully your dog will get back to normal too.

Hey, didja ever take Nikki to the vet to see about that medicine that somebody said might stop that?

Gidget goes through periods of wanting to be outside all day, even when it's freezing out. She's outside now, standing vigil against anything that moves.

Homer doesn't like to be out except to pee, unless we are outside too.

I've been trying to keep Cartman kitty in at night ever since he went walkabout... even though I've only seen the coyote during the day, I still think the risks are greater at night. Not sure why. But anyway, he's been sticking pretty close himself, only going out to potty and coming back within a short time. I don't know if he got a scare, or got wandering off out of his system, or if it's just cold out.

No, I got the stuff for her arthritis, but that's as far as I'm going. I decided that if she can't be kept comfortable in the trailer, I'll put her down. I just don't believe it's right to keep old dogs alive with lots of medication. I hoping after a while, and in the summer, (if she makes it) that the arthritis medicene isn't a constant thing she'll have to take. If it is, then I'll have her put down. We're waiting to see how she does. So far she seems to be doing better. I know to some I sound heartless, but that is how I feel about it. And I'm also very convinced she has lost a lot of her hearing too. I'm gearing up for the decision. I think a peaceful death is better then old age being drug out too long with numerable health problems.

You are absolutely right to keep Cartman in at night. Coyotes are definitely nocturnal. They get cranked up in extended "song fests" at night around my BIL's place. Usually the only time I see one during the day is if something is wrong with it. A lot of times that's how you can tell that animal is rabid, when it starts doing abnormal things.

We don't have any incidence of rabies in the region to speak of, but I have seen this one in daylight. I think he's just gotten bold, or hungry, there's a lot fewer rabbits around than their used to be.

Well, it all depends on the quality of life that they might have if given the medication. I wouldn't do it either if it was simply going to keep them alive, but if it lets them return to normal activities, I think I'd have to give the medication. That is if I could afford it. I know that some of those medicines are not cheap by any means.

Apparently we have quite a problem with it around here, expecially in the raccoon population, which would in turn affect the coyote population. They've resorted to dropping rabies vaccine in bait cubes from airplanes, trying to get it under control.

I wanted to see if the CDC was still reporting virtually no cases here of rabies. The maps on this page are interesting... There is virtually no cases in coyotes anywhere... A couple cases here, only in bats, and in your area, raccoons, like you said.

Cool Map! Actually I appear to be in that white area in Alabama between the skunk and raccoon areas, so maybe I'm OK too. But I know I've seen on the news in the last month about the vaccine bait drops and they even showed what one of the bait cubes looked like so people would know what they were if they came across one. That's interesting about the lack of rabies in coyotes. I would've thought there would've been more. Same for Fox. Skunks appear to be the biggest culprit. I wonder why that is?

It's 2001 information, so those lines can move around quite a bit too. But I do know the last time I talked to my vet about shots for the dogs, he said rabies wasn't really the most pressing reason to keep shots up to date... that things like Parvo and Distemper were much more common, and that it's been YEARS since there have been cases of rabies in the area to speak of.

The thing that might also lead to our low numbers might be related to the fact that skunks seem to be a common source and our skunk population seems to have all but disappeared. I remember smelling them from time to time growing up, and now it's literally been years since I've either smelled one or seen one in the road.

Not sure why...
