The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Glad you found a good place to take her. I know better than to ever work at an animal shelter... I'd become my own animal shelter :~D

New monster pics from today :~D

Here's a funny sequence... Pip's up on back feet about to pounce on the tail...

And Gidget's response ;~D

I'm excited this morning. I saw a Pileated Woodpecker on the trees outside my door:). They're not a plentiful species, so you don't see them often. I knew they were around here I've seen them a few times, and heard them pecking at trees out in the woods. But this is the first one I've seen in over a year. They are a large bird, 16 1/2 inches, so there is no mistakeing them when you do see them. I didn't get a picture because I didn't want to get up and make movement and scare him away. But here is a google of one.

Good Morning.

Becky, do you have the suet cakes out for the birds? I used just buy suet, and put in a onion bag. One day a poor little Downey woodpecker got caught on the bag with one talon (is that what they are called?) Anyhow, I untangled him and he pecked away at my hand the whole time..ungrateful bird. Then I went to the wire cage suet holders. No more caught birds.

I have a varity of bird feeders. I have some wire cages for seed bars, but I don't have any for suet yet. I'm going to buy that type next:)

I have had lots of downeys, and redbellied wookpeckers this year. But I have been reading that alot of species do like the suet, so that is next on the list to get for them.

Around here, they sell the suet with all sorts of goodies pressed into it - bird seed, dried fruit, nuts, etc.

They also sell it with cayenne pepper in it to repel squirrels. Apparently birds can't taste pepper!

What precious kitties!

And Gidget is being very good. My cats will approach Shelley (the little one rather wildly) and she will do the same thing - flop over on her back and grin around at them.

We buy the suet cakes with the goodies pressed in, and use the wire cage for it :~D I'm laughing at the scene of trying to free the ungrateful bird :~D. The little birds love it, the bigger birds like jays, and the squirrels ignore it.

Becky, your woodpecker sounds cool. We have a red-headed woodpecker here, but they're smaller I think... about the size of a jay.

That scene with Gidget and the kitten after the tail went on a while... and Gidget eventually got up and put on a very pathetic victim display to me to help her. I think I can say she's now kitten safe. So's Homer. They ran right across him the other day when he was asleep on the couch, and it scared the pants off him, but he didn't do anything.

Good morning all. Great pictures, Hair, of your new kitten.

I just said goodbye to some overnight guests from New Mexico --- an elderly couple who are great friends. I took them down to see my mare and the donkey, and Billie Bray was good enough to bray for them.

It's great when your animals show off when they are supposed to.

Much drizzle and some wind today, it is supposed to go down to 27 here in the hill country so have to put all my potted plants on the back porch and throw cover over them. And plastic over my saddles on the front porch.

I sure could use a tack room. Well, that's next.

No, not yet. They keep saying we are going to get 1-3 inches. But it is horribly horribly cold. Wind chills below 0.

I just got in from spending the day with Jenny. She had to have a model to work on at her work. They get checked every once in a while to make sure they are cutting by Supercut technique. I needed a trim anyway. Then I went with her to do some Christmas shopping. Sooooooo cold. I came home feed the horses, gave them some hay, and put the dogs in the trailer with a heater. It's suppose to warm up by the weekend....I hope they get that right.

Becky

Too bad someone couldn't photoshop Kerry's head (or someone else's) onto the ball that Pip is biting into. It would make a great Viking kitty picture!

With precipatation in the forecast I brought in my feed barrel and feed bags to the house. They are in the dining room:)

I have a saddle rack and saddle in my entry way:). Not enough room in the trailer.

Heh... at least you don't have the spare bedroom full of hay :~D

We leave our saddles in the trailer for the summer, but we have to bring them in for the damp months or they mildew.

Before I say anything, I am still at least a week behind everyone reading fast to catch up! LOL
Glad you got your barn straight Becky, It's so handy to have a man around that can do stuff like that, and I agree with you about not wasting the lumber.
Cool pic of the OWL, we have great horned owls here too and yes, they do indeed carry of fully grown chickens. I don't know about cats, but my Tom has been gone this past week too. Pretty sad as he is a great purrer! Hope he makes it back.
Hair, hope you cat comes home soon.
Tuffy, glad your hubby is better and I hope you and the children are doing well.
We have been travelling all over this past month and think we have found a place in Virginia. I'll let you all know more if/when it happens/goes through. :)

Hope everyone else is ok, I have been busy studying and havent had a chance to get on here much.
Are you all set for Christmas?
What is your Christmas Eve/Day traditions/routines?

Hopefully I'll catch up soon if anyone has answered me! LOL
