This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You just can't see where you need to go to get around all this stuff. We tried it one time but had to turn around and go back coz we kept on running into dead ends where the logs and branches were just too high.
Is this state forest? Will they not go through and clean the dead and downed trees?
It's National Forest, and a Wilderness area, so they typically don't. But last year they did hire some crews from out west, while there was snow on the ground in their home areas, to come and cut out some of the more widely used trails. They didn't do this particular trail though. And after all the hurricane damage we've had this year, they're all closed up again. I sure hope they get them to come again, but because of the Wilderness designation, they have to do it all with hand tools, which really seems stupid to me, so I can understand why they might not. You would think that all the pine beetle damaged trees would eventually fall and we'd have a healthy forest again.
I see... I understand the distinction, sentiment is a little nutty right now about natural processes verses managed resources. Someday the pendulum will swing back on common sense. I do believe that.
I sure do hope so. I mean, the argument is like the one that some of the more radical religious groups have about modern medical care. They want to do God's will and if it's God's will for their kids to die of common diseases, then so be it. But what if it was God's will that modern medicine has advanced so much that it can treat most of these things. Then what?
It reminds me of the old joke about the preacher in the flood. It just gets a little silly sometimes.

All we can do is be part of the pressure to swing back...
And just consider it all good theater.
There are some areas around Mt. St. Helens that I think are really interesting, from a natural study standpoint. Most of the forest was cleaned up and reseeded... but they left a sizeable area as part of the monument untouched, just to see and watch what happens. What will the land look like and how would it recover without human intervention? That's interesting. That's a huge disaster area. Blow down from hurricanes is not interesting.
Blow down and dead diseased standing timber is of no habitat, timber, or natural wonder value. It's a fire risk, a disease risk, and an inefficient habitat that we ~can~ help along. And we should. Yes fires are a natural cleaner, yes, slow decomposition will occur eventually... but we can speed that up so that the environment gets the benefit of the thriving forest without the long wait of time. There is no functional difference between the clearing benefit of occasional fires, and the clearing benefit of logging.
I think someday the governing interests will see that.
Yeah, I think it's interesting too. Do you know of any satalite sites that have before and after arial photos of the Mt. St. Helens area? I saw some that showed before and after shots of the tsunami areas that were just incredible.

Frog, those pictures are really neat. Reminds me of the Smokies. Do you not have a horse club in the area that could help clean up the trails. Is anyone allowed to do that? In Ohio, the majority of trails are maintained by horse groups.

Well I'm aggravated:) My day is shot, heh heh, literally. Rifle season opened today. I thought about it this morning, as I was planning my day which included a ride. I got on the internet to check the days and discovered something even more disturbing....The rifle season has been extended to Dec 4!!!! AHHHHHHH.... 16 days.
While drinking my coffee this morning, it dawned on me about the season because I've been hearing shots fired. So riding is definitly out. I may be able to sneak in a ride during the week, but not on the weekends, or during the holiday days.

Here they can only used shotguns with slugs. Too flat. But, still I would not go out in deer season. Some of those guys would blast at anything, they thought was a deer. Well, I am out of here for the weekend. You all have a good one.
Mack and I talked about the medicine you recommended and I was going to call the vet next week to get some, so now I'm just going to make an appointment for him to see her. If this can't be controlled, I think I'll have to put her to sleep. She can't stay outside thru the winter, but I can't have her in the house with this problem.
And we've also come to the conclusion she is getting hard of hearing.
When things start going wrong with older dogs, it really goes fast.

I was just catching up here about the hunting season... ARGHHHH for you.
So sorry about Nikki... Is she spayed? There's a leakage problem that happens in older females that can be corrected with hormones. I don't know if that is what this is, but it was easily controlled in a friends dog.
