The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

UUMMMMMMMM....that does sound remarkable:)

Enjoy.

I'm sitting here trying to catch up on some bookwork, YUK.

When I reach the point I can't stand it anymore, I'll go for a ride:)

I can't figure out how to be in two places at the same time. My stepmother passed away about a month ago. My sister , her daughter, is expecting and they are having a shower for her. I was really excited about this trail ride but I need to go to the shower. Eddie and I talked about this yesterday. I had planned to still ride up until yesterday but in my heart I knew what I needed to do. There will be other rides and I'm probably going to a 3 day clinic in Dec. I'm going to call the club manager tomorrow and ask them to let me know the next time they get together.

Family, they can sure get in the way sometime can't they:). Well, I'm sorry you'll miss the ride, but the clinic sounds interesting. Is it with the lady you and Reba went and took a lesson from?

Beaker, I meant to post to you, that I'm sorry you got dumped. But it happens. Hope your next ride is more pleasant.

Well I hit a snag on riding today. The tree that I tie my horses to when I saddle or when I just want to leave them tied has been dead for several years. This past year I've been worrying about how safe it is to tie horses too. I've wondered if I had one spook and really pull back if they could pull it over.

But today is very very windy here. When I led Harley up there to be saddled I noticed how the big branches over his head were really waving around, and now a new worry, what if one of them came down while the horse was tied there....not good.

Mack thinks the tree died from having my horses tied to it and walking so much and loosening the dirt around the roots, so I really don't want to start tieing to a new tree if that's the case. Tying to the trailer is my only other option. Mack tld me he would make me some good tire blocks so that I could tie the horse to it without haveing to hook it up. But being lazy and knowing that Harley has been a bit spooky in the past about tieing to the trailer I've put off getting the job done.

Here's the tree

Well, I decided today would be a good time to the trailer out and tie him to it and see what happens. I pulled it out tied up a hay net for comfort for him and led him up there. He did jump around a git when Rocky come up behind him to the fence line, but I was watching and when he felt the pressure of the halter he didn't go any farther or fight it. So my lessons last spring must still be with him, and he knows he can't break loose.I'm going to leave him there awhile and maybe even go saddle him and let him stand there. May or may not ride, depends on his frame of mind:). I don't want to stress him to much and make him not like being tied there. I can see him from where I'm sitting now, and he's eating his hay but is standing pretty alertly and keeps looking around alot. The wind probably doesn't help, but if he can get use to that, he'll be fine under any conditions.

As I'm watching him, Rocky has wondered of where Harley can't see him, and he is really pacing as far as the lead will let him and whinning some. This may take awhile.

Well, the tie lesson is something horsey anyway... I have read, in the backcountry horseman materials, that tying them directly to the tree can be harmful to the tree, that they both compact and erode away the dirt around the root base.

That is why they recommend highlines between that put the horse out away from the base of the trees. If you have two trees that are sturdy and close enough together to do that, it's another option. It's a very safe method of tying, and wouldn't depend on your trailer being there and secure before you can do anything. If you want any description or pictures of mine, let me know. The rope around the tree can also damage the bark, and they recommend using a wide cargo strap around the tree, but it hasn't been a problem on the firs in our yard.

Are his sooty patches more on the other side, or is he back to being really light for winter?

I thought about that and may try that. But tieing him to the trailer is something I've needed to do. At most of the CTR's that is where they have to be tied. At the one I went to the park had tie posts which he does fine on.

I had no idea that tieing one to a tree would kill it..... I'm not real thrilled with the spot I've parked the trailer in, but it will be OK for today. I don't want a bear spot wore in the grass right there. I'm going to have to look around for a place where it will be convieneant to park the trailer in, and a safe place to tie him to it, and not right in the yard. I just wanted him today where I could keep and eye on him.

He is still acting a bit nervous out there. But he isn't pulling back. But with him being nervous I'm not really motivated to go out there ans saddle him.

Beings as you've mostly rode English you may not have any old western cinches around, but I've seen people use those to put around a tree trunk when making a tie line. They are wide and spead out the pressure.

The spots are mostly on the othere side, but they aren't as visible since he has grown some winter coat. I didn't realize how thick his coat had gotten till today.

We always have to shop and then eat. From past experience when we are full we put it off:') I'm out of here too. I'm painting a fence and just in cooling off.

I'm back from my ride. It was very short. I was all the way down to the creek when I heard a noise behind me. It was Nikki our old dog. She usually doesn't follow me anymore. I don't know why she did this time, but she can't go far. She gets to limping really bad, and stays that way for days. So I made a quick loop and came back. But at least I got some riding in. I could have went back out I guess, but I just went ahead and unsaddled. I'll go again tomorrow. Harley was a bit jumpy with all the wind. Needs some practice:)

It is so dang hot here. High 80's but feels like 90's. I keep doing a couple of pickets and coming back in to rest. I have about 10 more. I want this finished today. I'm tired of all these unfinished things around here:')

It's only in the 60's here, and with the wind you need a sweatshirt. I need to paint the picket fence around my patio, but that will happen in the spring. Hang in there:)

Oh, I saw something interesting out on the trail today. It was a trail that ran along the edge of the creek. Laying about where I turn to go down to the deep water crossing there was a plastic bag with 4 Granny Smith Green Apples in it. I looked around and saw a couple more apples stuck on some branches of trees that were along the short trail down to the creek. I wondered if they were there for baiting something....deer, beaver...Would any of you know if that's what that was for.

I ask because one year we had an idiot put some beaver traps in the creek. Luckily I found out about them being there before riding thru the creek. I tracked the guy down and gave him what for and told him I'd call the game warden if he ever did that again. That part of the creek is in city limits, so trapping is prohibited.

Anyway these apples make me neverous to go into the water incase there are some kind of traps around...Don't trappers have to mark traps so people will be aware they are there...how do they mark them??? Am I being paranoid:). This time of year with hunting season open we get alot of weirdo's out there.

Wow, thanks. I tried googling but couldn't come up with anything. Looks like that is what it is.

I posted an article about it. It really made me nervous to ride into the creek, wondering if there could be any traps of any kind.

That's really strange... I wouldn't have thought they'd put bait in plastic bags, seems like deer would be spooked by that, but who knows...

Glad you got to ride a little! He's jumpy cuz he's been off so long :~D
