This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I'd like to see them working too. I love driving around Mennonite country for that very reason.
...Still think you need the brood mare. Cross her with a TB for a colt you can sell.
Noooooo I don't! I got more horses'n I know what to do with right now. A Percheron/TB cross sure would be pretty but it'd sure be a big ol' hoss!
What's the situation your friend is dealing with on her horse? I'd like to know as much as possible about what can happen with Navicular... Is it just very advanced? or not responding to any of the Rx, or ?
I'd buy one. :~D Great big dressage prospect.
What would happen with a gaited draft cross? Has anyone ever tried that?
Well, he had a neurectomy and is doing much better than he was. She took him to this really high-dollar clinic near Nashville to have it done. There were million dollar horses there from all over the country, but Elizabeth is just plain ol' middle class folk like all the rest of us. I don't know how they afforded it, but the alternative was just not an option to her. After the neurectomy they put him in these special built up, rocker-toe shoes for a long time and he had to be confined to a stall and she had to take him back about once a month for them to be reset (at about $150 a pop) He's out of them now but is still in some kind of special shoes and they say that he should be able to do anything she wants him to do but jump. She doesn't care anything about jumping anyways but since he hasn't been ridden for almost 2 years he'll have to be slowly brought back up to condition. I don't think she really plans on riding him much anyway. He'll just be a very expensive pasture ornament, but she loves him and that's all that matters. She's planning on buying Spot from Shirley as soon as they get their barn and fence finished but they just discovered that her husband had a cancerous kidney and had to have it removed a couple of weeks ago so that's really thrown all their plans for a loop. Life's a b!tch sometimes!
They really are a riot. Adorable little morons :~D
And we're making progress with them mingling with the dogs...
Homer just needs to dial down his "curiosity" a bit here... we don't yet feel they are completely safe... Gidget has those moments too, where she's just making chase.
She's really having it rough. Here's to hoping that she can have a better turn of luck for awhile. I bet the ride really did her good. What's the phrase? "The best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse"? something like that? Well, it's true for wimmin too.
Those are wonderful pictures:)
It's nice you have so many people who will ride with you:)

:)
Kitties are so much fun.

Not that I know of but my guess is that the gait would be lost. Just too much trotting blood in there. To even get a "gaited" mule you've got to use a gaited jack, otherwise you usually just get a plain ol' trotting mule. Cav tried that once, using a very pacey mare in hopes that the jack's trot would even it out and he'd get a square-going mule but it didn't work, he got a trotty mule. She was very sweet but not very easy on the backside and he ended up selling her.

Yes it is, but we're a pretty far-flung bunch. None of us live very close to each other. We've just met up over the years at various rides and try to get together whenever we can. We just start calling and it's kinda like a network, one call triggers another and another and another. Shirley, Elizabeth and I originally planned this ride, then I called Dalton coz he lives near where we were going and he called the others. There's probably 12 or 15 others that I ride with at various times at various places and you just never know who's gonna be able to make it. But Shirley, the older heavy-set guy who owns Spot, is my main riding buddy. We ride almost every weekend somewhere.
Yep, she was so excited the night before the ride that she said she could hardly sleep. It was so funny (and touching too) to watch her and Spot when she first got there. She just had to give her that big ol' hug and closed her eyes and took a big ol' whiff of that wonderful horsey smell that horses have and you could just see all the worries melting away. She was needing the outside of a horse real bad. I called her a little while ago to see if she could still walk (she knew she was gonna be real sore after not riding for so long) and she said yes but that it was worth it. She said when she got home that she was still so excited about getting to go that her husband was laughing at her. She was afraid that she wasn't going to sleep that night either, but of course she did. Good trail tend to make you sleep like a baby.
I love the pics of your kitties and the dogs but they make really nervous, especially the ones of Gidget looking at them so intently. I've seen that look before and I don't like it. My favorite kittie got killed by my nephew's dog just a few weeks ago and it almost killed me, so don't trust the dogs with them for a good while yet. But then again, your dogs have been living with cats for a long time so you probably have nothing to worry about.
I think I'll wait and get a good one when I can afford it. Maybe a used one at an auction. Those are all really good tips about the water. Unfortunately I can't drink it cold. I has to be room temp or I cramp up big time.
I like the bridge picture. It's kind of a "who goes there ?" scene:')
Oh - I know I should be worried! I know that look too! The dogs've lived with kitties, but never any that are this small. They chase kitties in the yard that aren't their own (the gypsy neighbors have a couple) and they avoid my big kitty only because he kicks their ass. I'm watching them like a hawk. The kittens are just too tiny... I'm avoiding saying the "M" word (mouse) around the dogs, because I don't want any confusion!
Sorry to hear about your friend.
I also am sorry about your friend that died. Early 60's is too young.
I love that bridge too. The Parks and Rec Dept really did a super job on it. These are a few pics I took of it about this time last year. They've made it to where you can't get down to the water anymore because of some yahoos that got to rough riding around and pissed off the people who own the land surrounding it, but it's still pretty special. I hate it that we can't get down there anymore. There's always somebody that's gonna mess up things for everybody else and it just really burns my @$$!...
