This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Heh.. and someone ~stole~ it.
We finally got a little sprinkle or two here this morning after at least a month and a half of nothing. Maybe it'll settle the dust. When I was pulling the horse trailer in and out of the Forest on Sunday, it was like driving in a Saharan dust storm. The dirt roads were like inch deep baby powder. I had to hang back at least a half a mile from the trailer in front of me, trying to wait for the dust to settle or blow away. I don't think it's supposed to rain for long though. The next best chance of rain is on Sunday and that's only 20%. We sure need it, but I hate dreary rainy days for days on end. They get so depressing. I don't know why. Do they do that to you too?
How in the heck to you steal a gate that big?! Each side had to weigh several hundred pounds a piece. Plus, it's not like there are gates like that just hanging around any old place. The owner would be bound to recognize it if it turned up some place. I'd be watching ebay if I was them coz that's where I'll bet they try to unload it.

I'm sure it does get to me... how dark and gloomy it gets. What I really hate is mud. I sit and look out at the paddock and want to constantly go fuss with the drainage to clear mud dams and all the little puddles from when they walk through it. I sit and imagine the drainage system I will put in at my boarding stable to prepare the ground before I ever put a horse on it.
When I was in flight school, we'd sometimes get to go way up above the clouds on gloomy days, where it's always sunny, and we'd come back down and our mood was visibly better than everyone else. :~D It makes a difference.
Imagine the shipping if you bought it online though....
I'm sure they stood and stared at the driveway a long time... "Honey, someone stole the ~gate~"... "Whaaaat?"
Ah - is she one of your foals? I thought it was interesting that she was bred before she was backed... It has the potential of having matured her past a lot of the silly 2 year old stuff.
I know what you mean about the dust when it's been dry.... I hate dust almost as much as I hate mud.

Good morning. We never get trick or treaters at our place either - too rural. Just grandson and friend's granddaughter. The kids bring them every year so we can see their costumes.
Getting a weanling is a great idea. That's what's generally so easy about our horses. When it's time to saddle and ride them, they have been around us so long they completely trust us and not much upsets them. They have been hauled to shows, clipped, bathed, ponied and watched all the others go and come.
Well, you'd be surprised. I bought a huge plantation style king-sized 4-poster bed from a furniture outlet store in Hickory, NC and had it shipped and it was less than $100. I had to wait on it for several weeks but I didn't mind. I guess they contract with trucking companies or moving companies and when they get a load going to a particular part of the country they just put it on there and unload it as they go, dropping a piece here and a piece there. I was amazed.
Yeah - if you knew they'd be looking for it, you can't exactly just install it out in the driveway! At least locally. It's very weird, and I thought it was fascinating.
No, she's not one we raised. We bought her last spring (the people who owned her were afraid of her) and were just going to break her when we had time and sell her. Then we got Sonny and she's got a great pedigree and is huge so we decided to breed her for one baby. Lacey is weaned now so it's back to the original plan of training her and selling her.
I always loved flying. I don't get to do it very often, just your occasional business trip, but getting up above the clouds was always great. Like you say, it's always sunny and the sky is just this incredible shade of blue that just gets deeper and deeper the further up you look. I'm a confirmed window seat flyer and most of the time will have my nose pressed against the glass for the whole trip. I think the coolest thing I remember was on a flight back from Virginia on a full moon night with a complete cloud deck down below. It looked like snow and was absolutely gorgeous! The big thunderheads towering up out of it just seemed to glow. The other one I remember was flying across country from Memphis to San Francisco and seeing the snow on the Rockies and all the canyonlands in Utah and Nevada. It was so cool! I think I'd stay up there forever if I could.
LOL!! Yeah, you gotta wonder just what they were thinking. Sometimes crooks do some of the stupidest things.
But I have seen gates like that at a couple of high-end auction houses in Atlanta. One of 'em is called Great Gatsby's and I can't remember the name of the other one, but they mostly bring things over from estates in Europe. They've had huge marble fountains, bronze and iron gates like the one you mentioned, bronze statuary, whole rooms of raised panel oak, huge stained glass windows, and marble fireplace mantels with openings big enough to drive a team of horses through. It's incredible. I like going there when I'm in town just to wander through and see what they've got. And not just anybody can come to one of their auctions. I think you have to apply and be approved. I guess they want to know that you've got the cash before they let you bid.

It needs a large bronze horse in the center of the circular drive, I think.
