This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
OK, I've had some time now and am going back thru the posts from this morning and this post reminded me that I thought of a possible name for your new filly. "Lady of the Night". Could even have her call name as Lady, altho that's not all that original.

Hey, welcome to the thread.
I love minature donkeys, they're so cute.
Looking forward to pictures.

Depends entirely on the pony and the child.
Gawd dang, that thing is huge.
Becky
That is a really neat costume. You did a great job.
Becky
That's pretty much what I thought too. I'm not going to even mention it unless it comes up by the kid or the mother. And the mother will decide. I'm just thinking ahead on how to go about it if it comes up. I think putting her in a small confined area no matter what would be best.

Yeah - depends on how dead broke the pony is. Does JP ride by himself? I'd start out with a line on and then just feed more line out and participate less and less... does the pony lunge? It'd help to find out how spookable and flappable the pony is with a guinea pig kid. Does she jump if you kick her or does the pony just plod along no matter what the kid does? Would need to know that first. As well as how compliant the kid is to instructions.
Depends a lot on the kid too. This friend of mine uses her granddaughters to break in new ponies. I think they got velcro butts or something.
No JP hasn't rode him by himself excep in a 12 X 12 pen with Kristy right next to him. He has mostly just been led on her. Other children have ridden him by themselves and I don't think the pony is spooky.
Kristy said a 7 year old was riding her bareback the other day. She had to keep being told to sit up straight she was leaning back. I guess once the pony did move off faster when the kid bumped her to go and the kid rolled off the back. no one was hurt and the pony stopped immediatly. Kristy then got on her for a minute but she was fine after that.
I believe we'll just be leading mostly. I just was wondering about if the older girl asked to ride by herself. I think the pony would be fine from what I've been told. I'd probably reccommed the lunge line and just let the kid do the cueing.

I like "Lady of the Night". I also like "Midnight Mystique". Call her Myst or Misty.
Oh, I just thought of another.
Ebony & Ivory.

That seems a little too young to be riding by herself. We have only starting letting Alison ride by herself, and she is 6. A child is really only a passenger until they are 10 or so. Not much strength in those little arms. You certainly don't want her to get frighten.
Ok, thanks:)
Becky
Your work banned you from Free Republic? How terrible.
Welcome to the thread!
Eeew. It LOOKS like a baby rat, but if it's a mouse, it has a really thick long tail!
It depends on if the kid is ready herself to ride the pony on her own. I remember teaching a four year old who got really bored really fast and decided that she was going to get off the horse while he was still moving. Luckily I was walking by his shoulder so I caught her. It might be a good idea to walk by the pony and let her steer herself around.
Hello everyone!
Power finally came back on and with it came the phone, DSL and cable! *smiles*
Hi, glad you made it safely:)
Becky
Me too! :-D
