This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If I can throw in my own two cents, there's a large and small animal practice down the street from me, and he has a very large barn with a few paddocks out back. Nothing fancy. Like Hair's vet, my vet had a truck with the works, fridge, running water, you name it, she had it, and it was alway well stocked. She also always wore scrubs. Our equine dentists had something similar, only they wore pink sleeveless shirts, and on the back of their truck they had an elaborate scene of a galloping herd of horses. They were also big, burly and sweaty. :-) God could they sweat.

She's really cute. From what I can see, she is well built. Certainly is flashy enough. I wish you get success with her. With all the bad luck you have had lately, you deserve a break.

Dr. Bondurant, the local vet in my novel, does both large and small. I think his preference is small, but, hey, he needs the money. The hero --- not Dr. Bondurant --- is also a vet, of the surgical sort.
I'm sorry to hear about your vet. Have you chosen a new one? What criteria would you use to pick a new vet?
And welcome to NaNo! As you can see from their website, No Plot is No Problem! You could write about your horses!
One vet is mobile - he works out of his truck, gorgeous fairly new Dodge with his computer hooked up in it - to keep all his records and prints bills, etc. He does farm calls, and handles whatever he runs into, floats teeth (he's the best equine dentist in the area), and does chiropractic work on horses. He travels all over northern NV and northern CA. Sometimes we load up horses and meet him at a park in town - no farm call that way. I absolutely love him, he comes in the middle of the night to hold my hand when necessary.
The other practice we use probably does have twenty acres. They specialize in equine reproduction, do surgery as necessary, collect semen and AI mares. There are three vets in that practice, a barn where they do surgery, ultrasounds, etc., and a barn where they house mares waiting for AI plus the clinic office. They can get just about any mare in foal and keep her there.
Since he died I have been using a girl that lives very close to me. She has been in practice for about 5 years. Very nice girl and so far as been right on about her diagnoses and treatments. I've not had anything major tho, (knock on wood), a colic, a uterine infection, and a lameness problem.
The criteria I used picking her mainly was the fact that she was so close....not good criteria I know, but with no major problems I figured most any vet would work. I've looked around but to be honest as good as she has been so far I'll probably try her now even for a major thing. She has also been very reasonable on her fees, which is a major criteria for me:).

Sure - that's cool... Mine isn't that fancy, that I posted above, but then, no one's writing a novel about my vet... :~D
