This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Reba, help me if I get this wrong. We worked on problem situations that might occur. One was to slow a run away horse or to make a stuborn horse turn. We had to sit straight and pass the reins from hand to hand while taking the free hand to reach and take the rein and slowly turn them going thru cones at a walk and then a trot, while keeping our balance. I didn't pull her head sharply at all. She had a name for this exercise but I can't remember it.
Could there have been something out there since he never has balked before?
Oh, OK, I was just curious. I've been told the same thing to do with a run away.

I don't know exactly where his registration is right now but he has a Bay parent or grandparent if that makes a difference.
Would he go forward alright going in other directions other than the trail you wanted to go down? Was he giving you a hard time doing the circles, etc? Two possibilities I'd say, either he is behaving "barn sour" and didn't want to leave the barn area, or there was something down that trail he didn't want to run in to.
His mother for sure was a bay. Celia owned his mother. She is dead now.

We also practiced lifting the rein and sliding the second hand to the neck. I worked on that too but Sarah Lee cheats. She stops as soon as I dig my heels and sit back.
I guess it was her then. I just remember seeing "bay"
Yes - he could be a bay. His legs don't look that dark in the other picture, and his front legs really don't look black but the back one does.
His breed is listed as a "Canadian Sporthorse"
I've never heard of that. Personally I think he's a bit ugly. Awefully big headed.
His color is where he's listed as a tri colored paint.
So I guess now that I've looked back at him and seen he's really not a registered Paint, that doesn't answer the question.

Looking at the picture that Hair posted, it looks like he may be. To be a bay, his points (legs, mane, tail) would be black where they aren't white.
Ok, I don't understand.
Becky
OK - he is part draft then. Probably Clydesdale.
He does have a big head, but you see that when you introduce draft into those sporthorse blends.
I just love a big sturdy horse. It's kindof at odds with my love of Arabians... I guess I like extremes :~D
I'll have to get back with you tomorrow on that exercise Cindy, and the problem estrogen. I just saw the time:) I'm keeping JP in the morning, I'll try to ride in the afternoon, and Blake will be here again tomorrow in the evening. I need to go to bed:)
Have a nice evening everyone.
I removed my first tick today. Sarah Lee had one on her neck. My trainer there and was going to do it but I told her no, it was my horse. I thought she was gonna smack me though when I told her I was going to go get some gloves and alcohol. Nasty things. She had me look at the site afterwards. She said that often the big one is a male and there will be a smaller female under him when you pull him off. He was single though, thank goodness.
His tail used to be mostly black. As Hair says, he may be bleached. He has black in his mane and if you wanted to be picky there is actually 4 different colors to his mane because he has a light and darker blond/white. He has some black on his legs but it isn't solid.
Okie has black spots all over him. You just can't see them. White hair grows over the spots .
Pharoah? Why?
He looks Egyptian to me.
