The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Our friends are cotton farmers and I will try and get some pics tommorow. As for the pic of Smokey picking up his feed bucket and bringing it to me, yeah that would have made a great pic. I wish I had a camera phone as I always have that on me! My digital is fairly large and so it doesn't travel in my pocket.

Well, as it turns out, we didn't have nearly enough whipped cream to give any semblance of coverage. Oh well, maybe another time :~D

Depending on where you live, this could be the perfect time for winter overseeding. Where I live, I use perennial rye and tall fescue for winter overseeding. Then, in the spring when it starts to warm up and rains a lot, I overseed with bermuda and a pasture mix. I am about to overseed for winter myself. Probably get it done next week. I sprayed the weeds this week, then we'll disc it this weekend in preparation for winter seeding.

Discing is optional. If you have an established pasture, don't disc. Since I don't have much established except weeds, we are going to disc it. Then, pray for rain after seeding otherwise I will have to water it myself.

Flooding has been pretty bad. Today and for most of the week, they're holding their breath in my mother's town over a dam that looks like it might break. If it does, it's going to flood most of the city. Already, most people's basements are flooded, or people have water up to their foundations.

Is your mother on high ground or will this affect her too? Prayering that this dam doesn't break. This has been such freaky weather.

I was joking. I like it. It's my play house. I just hate that I don't have it in better shape for you though. As a matter of fact I plan on putting it at the stables or in the back yard and moving into it, eventually.:')

I would love to stay home this weekend but if Dad doesn't show up here or takes off to Vegas or where ever those helicopters are then I guess I'll go check on him. Earlier I was thinking about taking the horses and riding at his place and seeing if you wanted to meet me. He said he would like to see them. I thought it might cheer him up. That's a good turn around trip for them though so I changed my mind.

Good Morning.

My Co-worker's surgery came out fine, and she is doing well. She will be off for about 6 weeks. Overtime for me before Christmas.

I saw all of that flooding on the news and was wondering if there were any saddle club members or their loved ones in that area. The dam situation is baaaad. Keep us posted...

We are just the opposite, no rain in weeks, everything is brown and dead, my stock tank is down to inches. We had record heat yesterday, it was 94 degrees. Supposed to be the same today. It's really depressing and everyone seems to be in a bad mood.

If you are having a weed problem in your pasture-I suggest that you investigate spraying with Stinger. It will kill all of the broadleaf weeds and not effect the grasses. It cost about 30 bucks an acre to apply but is well worth it.
Very non-toxic also.I don't have the info here with me but I think that the horses can go back on the pasture after 3 days.I wouldn't disc the ground since you end up bringing more weed seeds up into the germination zone.

My mom isn't so near the center of the city that it'll affect her. If she was, however, she'd be in loads of trouble because she lives in a basement apartment. The ones that I'm worried about are my grandparents. They're much closer to the center of the city, and if the dam broke it would affect them. My grandmother is 76 and my grandfather is 88 and has emphysema and can't do much of anything. I've been checking up on them regularly to make sure that they're ok. Much of the city is shut down, and many have been evacuated, but a lot refuse to leave. John Kerry is going to do a tour of the city today I think. Blech.

I personally invite you to take some of the water that we've got behind this dam. :-)

Hey, Hair!

Believe it or not, I HAVE that album. In vinyl. bought it new some time in the 60s. If you like a fairly raucous Mexican-style brass band, it ain't bad music.
