Better yet, I got a link off that Melungeons site and read about Croatans.

I'd been meaning to look up Croatans ever since having been running on Croatan Ave. at Nags Head on NC's Outer Banks this summer (after I ran the dunes at Jockeys Ridge).

You never know what you'll learn on FR.

That's what happens when the libs take over the education system and start re-writing history.
If you had been educated in a NC or VA school in the 50's and early 60's, you would know that CROATAN is the word that was carved into a tree, on Roanoke Island. "The Lost Colony" is the story of that.
As to Melungeons, my family has roots in western NC, and SW VA. 1/2 Cherokee, 1/2 white. My mother and aunt tell me we are part of that.
Pat Spurlock Elder has written a book Melungeons:Examining An Appalachian Legend
An extremely comprehensive study.
