Work-at-home opportunities for new mom?

Hi all,

This is basically just a shot in the dark, but my husband and I are going to be moving soon and have our first baby due at the beginning of the year. I am looking for any kind of work that I can do from home to bring in some extra income. There are so many things advertised online, and I know a lot of them are hoaxes or not really any use for making money.

I don't care if it's stuffing envelopes, though I can do a lot with computers.

If any of you have experience or know of someone who works at home and has any idea for me, please let me know either in a reply to this thread or in a private message.

My wife has done Premier Jewelry and Home Interiors. She made some pretty good income for a while, until my income picked back up and she could quit.

How do you find a doctor that will let you just start processing his claims? Dont you need credentials? or training?
Real Estate investors will pay for you to look for properties for them? Arent there free listings on the net?
Dont you need experience with insurance coding to transcribe accurately?
How do you run an Ebay store do you need inventory
or do you use inventory listed elsewhere and mark it up for your store when and if you get an order?

Wow! lots of questions.

For processing claims you might would need some experience to know your way around, but you can look for a small Doctor office that the Doctor is trying to run the business end(which hardly works out) and have them show you how to use their system or fill out the forms that have to be sent in. Its something you can learn on the go or look at a Junior College nearby. They usually have medical coding classes that run a few days or weeks.

Real Estate, yes there is a need to have gophers do leg work on finding property so that a Developer or Investor can spend more time on other aspects of the business.

Check with your state laws. "Bird Dogging" is illegal in some states, so make sure you are a contracted employee of whoever you're working for. Also make sure you have a written contract.

Ebay Store. Many many many people do nothing but sell and buy off of Ebay and make very good money. You need to analysis the market to see what is selling and what is not. Then decide on what type of stuff you know and work on how to market the product. You don't have to use just Ebay, there are other on line auction sites including specialty sites. And yes I know people that buy stuff off of Ebay and mark it up and resell it. Crazy isn't. Also you can setup a Ebay drop off in your town for people to drop stuff off for you to sell. They get part of the profit.

A few months ago I read an article in some major newspaper (NYT?) re a company that trains people to audit medical bills for errors. They certify their trainees, and set them up to start a franchise-type business which makes its money by getting a cut of the incorrect excess charges found. Seems most medical bills are loaded with invalid charges. I believe insurance companies are the primary clients for this business. Google around and I'm sure you can find it.

I became a Southern Living at Home consultant in July to help pay for our exhorbitant property taxes. I am really enjoying the experience and the people are great. If you are looking into a direct sales organization I suggest several things. 1) Make sure that they are selling a product instead of just selling recruiting. 2) Make sure your start-up costs are low (under $200 or so). 3) Stick with a company that doesn't require you to keep inventory. Otherwise you are spending more than what you take in.

There are plenty of legitimate direct sales companies out there and you really can make good money at it if you work your business. Don't forget you get great tax-deduction benefits with a direct sales business in addition to the extra income!

stay away from the drop shippers for eBay.

what do you have an interest in? what are your hobbies? can you think of anything related to that that you could sell on eBay?

eBay is hard work but a good way to make some extra cash. or like me, to support yourself.
