My Grandmother Could Play For US Soccer Team, Says Mexican Coach

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's coach Ricardo La Volpe described the United States as a little team which his grandmother could play for following his side's 2-0 defeat on Saturday, local media said.

"It's a little team," La Volpe was widely quoted as saying following the World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio.

"Here, everyone's interested in baseball and American football and many people didn't even know that a soccer match was being played today.

"So it's easy for them, because they aren't playing under any pressure. My mother, my grandmother or my great grandmother could play in a team like that."

The U.S., who have 18 points from seven games in the final stage of the CONCACAF qualifying competition, booked their place at next year's World Cup with the win.

Mexico, unbeaten in their previous 14 qualifying matches and two points behind the U.S., still need one point from their final three games to qualify.

"They scored a goal and then they sat back," said Argentine La Volpe.

The match had been preceded by a slanging match, sparked by an interview which U.S. striker Landon Donovan gave to Spanish language media in his country.

Donovan said the Mexicans were jealous of the U.S., always out to humiliate them and he wanted to make them feel miserable.

After Saturday's match, Donovan was in no more conciliatory mood.

"They suck," he said. "I'm so happy. After we got that first goal they were never in the game. Hopefully that will shut them up for the next three or four years."

NFL is not the real deal, would rather watch the college kids get it on.

Soccer became popular in the US not because of the illegals, but due to the fact that many parents would not allow their boys to be involved in such a violent sport. I blame the wussys in our midst more than the mexicans.

I bet his mother, granmother, and great-grandmother can take on a whole soccer team, if you know what I mean. (sorry, couldn't resist)

I've never cared for the public trashing of the opposing team, win or lose. People who make comments like this have lost a lot more than a game.

Yep. That's pretty low class behavior by both sides.

You go Donovan. Loved the way the team and crowd wrapped themselves in the American flag after winning. Some of the players were crying and kissing the flag. Beasley was amazing, the Mexicans were kicking and tripping him constantly in attempting to disable him any way possible.

It's funny, you just got your asses kicked and shutout, and then you belittle the other side. Mexican culture in a nutshell; stupid, unproductive, failure, poor judgement.

Soccer is not quite the "wussy" sport you make it out to be. Anyone remember the USA player who had is jaw broken vs. Brazil in the '94 cup? I also witnessed in person a professional (Rochester Rhino) goalie badly mangle his face by diving into a square wooden goal post. I have been personally knocked out a few times and broken an opponent's leg. And if none of that impresses you, try running continuously for two 45 minute periods on a 95 degree day in the sun.

As far as this thread is concerned, the real wussy is the Mexican coach.

Let's all give a cheer for Landon Donovan, who tells it like it is.

Hey, Coach. Maybe your grandmother could play for the U.S. soccer team. Is it true that your mother entertained the Mexican soccer team?

Apparently, he missed the second goal. That's okay. So did his goalie.

Ow! I felt that one all the way over here in Los Angeles!

Not saying the players are wussy, just the sport. Well conditioned? Absolutly, but so are NBA, NFL, and if they play NHL. Are there injuries? You bet, but even MLB players suffer injuries equal to the ones you name.

Maybe wussy is the wrong word, BORING would be better. Sorry, just don't like to watch a track meet with a ball.
