Fox was just saying they're telling people to get to the third floor of a building. That may get them thru the storm, but what about the aftermath?

What with storm surge, surely third floor wouldn't be nearly high enough, would it? And much higher than that...I'd thing you'd risk being in a building that gets knocked down.

And being trapped somewhere after a hurricane, with no water or power or food...that sounds like one of the worst nightmares imaginable.

Seems like the flooding is what's really going to be horrible. How exactly will water recede from a place like that? It doesn't!

This city never should have been built.

You do have to wonder what they were thinking.

Then again they ~were~ French, but ~we~ bought it for them...

If nothing else it will give us month's of distraction watching all the FR debates over whether or not it should be rebuilt.

Fox is talking about that now. Telling people if they are in the higher buildings to stay away from the windows.

Reporter interviewed a couple of the street. They're from Cincinatti. Delta cancelled their flight and they can't get a rental car. They're stuck.

Hey, now there's an idea. Abandon the location!

Live thread said something about the hotels being declared exempt from the mandatory evacuation because all flights out have been canceled, and there are lots of tourists who are unable to leave - as you said, they can't get cars.

Not to make light of the situation...but talk about a vacation from hell - yipe!

Do it while everyone is out anyway.

I'm worried about some friends from the saddle club thread. Many are talking about this as a Lousiana problem, but my friends are in northern Alabama. They're gonna get hit pretty hard too. No word from them, they may be very busy.

Yeah, Louisiana is gonna get the worst of it. But Alabama and Mississippi, and maybe even parts of Florida, aren't gonna get off easy.

Mississippi is gonna get hit badly as well. The whoe state is covered by storms in every computer simulation of the hurricane's path.

Even for those who miss the worst of the winds, this thing is going to dump tremendous amounts of rain, isn't it?

Really large area will be impacted.

And a lot of it is going to drain into the Mississippi...and back into NO.

Yeah, there's gonna be plenty of blame going around. And the airlines aren't gonna get off easy. They cancelled flights because they didn't want to fly empty planes into New Orleans.

Exactly. And she's not gonna stop dumping rain when she heads inland. Water is going to KEEP flowing into the river. For days.

That thought occured to me last night. Could be an interesting debate.

Fox is talking to an Oceanographer that said water in some places in the city could be 30-35 feet.

It boggles the mind.

There's no way they'll be able to get everyone who's stranded in a flooded building out... not if the city stays flooded.

I'm going to have to stop monitoring the hurricane thread. Don't think I can handle too many reports of nursing homes with only 1 nurse left to take care of residents.
