The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We went to a used book store the other day to see if they had it...I still haven't read it!

Steve loves it...he read it a long time ago. But I'm surprised at how much my kids love it!

I hope my flour on the board idea works...if it's an opossum doing it (and they are poultry predators from what I have read), then the print will have an opposable thumb.

"It's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die from asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."

"Why? What did she say?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen."

good idea... tho' I really doubt itsuh possum... and a coon and possum track are hard to tell apart to an unexperienced eye, (less'n you get a good rear foot track) its a classic coon motus oporandi... but I could be wrong... either way, coon or possum, it'll be back now...

Are the chickens in the garage, or in the coop?

In the coop. They are all three up in the top nest box and it is securely shut up.

But like Ruthy and g'nad say...I'm pretty sure it'll be back. It'd have to go to a lot of trouble to get them now...I wonder if it would?

We never did find Isabelle's head. I finally just told both the boys that if they find it, don't be alarmed, just come get me. (Matthew could handle it...he helped butcher the meat chickens, but Joshua might not handle it well.)

So Steve came home and went out to bury the rest of the body and Joshua went hollering out at him "IF YOU FIND THAT CHICKEN'S HEAD, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, JUST GO GET MOM!"

I had to chuckle.

Well, it's a pretty sturdy coop, I know, I just wouldn't underestimate a raccoon's ability to tear into chicken wire.

That's true...I've already been out 3 times to check on them.

I'll go out again in a bit.

They're pretty good at figuring out how to unlatch doors, too.

I've got it pulled shut with a bungee cord...it's pretty tight.

I hope it'll do...I think it will.

Gosh, how old is Jar jar...we've had 'em going on three years? The coop is tighter now than it has been in the past and we've never had trouble except for that rat I impaled.

I don't know where the time (or the knives) went, but my second batch of 100 shipping boxes is running low. So time to order another 100 for $86, including shipping. With the sheath knife program running down, this third batch should last a bit longer.

Second, somebody has a barracks thief in their unit. We lost two dozen CRKT folding knives between here and Iraq once, but insurance covered it. This one make it to the proper address, but someone lifted it. I really hope it was some civilian puke, like a janitor, and not another Soldier. Here's the email exchange:

------------

Rich Wow! Talk about your immediate responses! I really do appreciate what your doing. I have talked with other soldiers around here that have been dealing with you and everyone is extremely pleased. I think my home address would be better. Robert B. [redacted]

Thanks so much and I will be keeping you posted on our progress.

If the bastard that stole your knife asked us, we would have given him HIS OWN knife. You all have earned them.

Next to cowardice, thievery is the worst thing in a brother Soldier. There's someone out there you can't trust with your stuff, much less watching your back.

I have another Camillus BK2 waiting for you. Please send me your HOME address, if you think it's safer.

Rich, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you but I was at the AH-64 AQC (aircraft qualification course) in Marana AZ. I had called our ops NCO and he told me that my knife had arrived and that he put it in my desk. Well, when I got here it was gone. I guess somebody needed it worse than I did. I wanted to thank you for sending it though and I still am going to send you something cool from Afghanistan.

If you ever do have another knife lying around with no home you can always send one out this way. I will leave my address just in case. Thanks again and I will keep you posted on our progress.
