The mayor of Los Gatos wandering around Oak Meadow Park packin' a shotgun? Then down on his knees pleading for mercy? Is this the behavior we expect from the town's No. 1 guy? It is for Mayor Mike Wasserman, and it's not even an election year.
Certainly asking for votes at gunpoint would not be acceptable, and begging for votes from his knees would be an act unbecoming of someone of his political stature. But to do so in the spirit of William Shakespeare shows what a good sport we have sitting center stage on the town council dais on the first and third Monday of each month.
Wasserman is playing a role of an outlaw in the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival's adaptation of Two Gentlemen of Verona. And while it's not a major role--he has just one line, which we're told he delivers with all the pomposity of Olivier--that he is performing at all is a testament to his community spirit, or at the very least his good sportsmanship. (Reports that Ray Davis was seen in the audience booing Wasserman's performance cannot be confirmed.)
Really, the whole thing is all Steve Glickman's fault. Councilman Glickman, during his year's reign as the mayor of Los Gatos, accepted a role in the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival last summer, indirectly throwing down the gauntlet for all mayors to follow.
It's likely something the town needs to look into--a change in the job description for those interested in making a run for the town council--"Wanted: Candidate for public for public office. Must be willing to represent the town at community events; attend town and county meetings; ride in the annual Children's Christmas and Holiday Parade; and perform in stage productions in town ... singing and dancing optional."
Instead of running for office, we may find more candidates running from office.
