The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

So he's just going to stand there all day?

Good morning!

I was beginning to wonder where everyone was this morning:)

Yep, he'll stand there all day. You know us, we are firm believers that that is a very good lesson for horses. Any new horse, or a horse that hasn't been rode in a long while, especially a very young one, this is about the best thing you can do to teach patience. He'll be in the shade all day.

It's interesting... You guys are the first time I've heard of that. And I believe your testimony that it works.

Is he out of sight though? That's the part that would make me worry.

Yes he is out of sight. But he is tied with a halter and rope that won't break, and there is nothing around other then the trailer for him to get into. I don't believe this horse has ever had a problem with being tied.

You know when you go to a barrel race or a roping. There can be very long waits till it's your turn. You either have to ride the whole time, or tie the horse. If you tie, I feel you should be able to walk off and leave the horse, so you can go watch. That lots of times means leaving them where you can't see them. That's one reason it's important to know that they will stand tied for long periods. That was one reason i was worried about Harley. I still make sure I have him tied with a good halter and lead rope, I use one of those rope halters and the lead is wove into the halter, so there is no hardware to break. The hardware, buckles and such is usually what will break. But Harley hasn't been a problem anymore.

Tieing horses to stand for long periods is done all the time by alot of people around here. I've know them to be left saddled overnight. I think this guy had that done to him. He bucked Charlie off one night for no good reason other then being squirrely. Charlie rode him after that for about 3 hours, then tied him up came back the next day, gave him some hay, then he stood there till the afternoon, when Charlie got on him again. He was a different horse.

It's a safer training method for a squirrely horse then riding it out of them. Just the little I've done it, it's amazing the change in attitude you will see in them. I think it teaches them also who the head honcho is.

Good morning.

Do you have places to go see today? How much longer is your vacation?

I'm certainly intrigued by it....

And it's something I'll keep in mind if we ever have a problem or a young one. I can certainly see that it would teach patience, and to honor the leadrope... and be enough of a sensory deprivation that they'll be looking to make friends with whoever comes to untie them.

He can see Harley in the arena if he turns sidewise. When I tie one to my tree, they can see all the other horses out in the runs and pastures.

I think it's more just having someone come untie them and give them food and water, that makes them glad to see you:)

I've thought it might be a good think for Pony. I know that will probably make you cringe. But it would be worth a try. You can tie them where you can keep an eye on them, as long as you don't go rescue them if they start throwing a fit. Can you get a saddle on her? Even if you can't I'd get her out every day after she ate her feed and hay, saddle her if you can, then tie her up and leave her till supper. I'd make sure she could get water, especially if it was hot. But I bet after a day or two, she'd be alot calmer and more trustful of you. After all you'd be the one letting her go. Just something I'd try with her:) If anything it might make it easier for her when you leave her alone, and you wouldn't have to drug her.

well this morning, i have been reading all the posts and learning. : )
Deaconjim as a boy tied his horse to a heavy metal swingset when called indoors, when he came back out he found the swingset, plus horse down at the barn about 1/4 of a mile away!
This is our last night in this place as the owner of the next place has invited us to come early. : )
We are going to go to a state park or something today and relax rather then look at properties. The next place in MO, has its own fishing pond, horses, swimming hole and creek and 200 acres. : ) The owner and I have spoken many times and we are very excited to see each other.
On Sunday we are meeting up with a cousin of Daves (emmas and jacobs dad that died of cancer) and we are SO looking forward to that. I have never met her and she was very close to Dave as child so we have a lot of catching up to do. : ) Lots of photo swaps! I am cooking a Cornish pie (meat) for her that she hasnt had since being in America the last 20 years. : )

You're right, it might be good for her. Not sure I'm committing to do it now, but maybe sometime when there's a coherent plan to work and follow through with her.

I don't have a cinch for her that will even pull tight, or I could put my saddle on her.

You have to make sure that whatever you tie too is very solid:).

In fact the tree I tie too, has died, (I don't know why), but I've been tying to it, and am starting to worry that if I got one really fighting they might could pull it over. I'm not sure, but I don't want to take a chance.

If one ever breaks loose, they learn they can, then teaching them not to pull back is even harder. That's why you don't every rescue them when throwing a fit. If you can't stand to watch then don't As soon as you untie them if they are fighting, they have won the battle and you have either created a problem, or made one worse.

It is amazing how strong they are. I tied one to a fence post one time of a fence that I thought was strong. The horse sat back and pull 4 posts down the fence line out of the ground before he stopped.

Oh, and in case you don't know, don't tie to a trailer that is not hooked to a truck or has the tires blocked VERY well.

I didn't know if she would let you saddle her. Couldn't remember if you had ever said.

Well if you ever do it, let me know how it goes:)

LOL....perfect opening for me to ask. Now be honest, it won't hurt my feeling:)

How many had the inital knee jerk reaction that leaving a horse tied all die saddled is abuse or mean?

There is a lady that lives down the road, that has a big pecan tree out in her pasture, that can be seen from the road. When we first moved here she lots of times would have a horse tied out there all day. After people started moving out here she had t quit doing that, because she got complained about "abusing" her horses.

I've been interested to know "how" this is abuse?

Becky

Well, I guess it because we can't help but apply our own human feelings onto the horse.

"How would we like to be tied up all day?"

But then again, you have to remember that a horse isn't human and could hurt/kill you if it wanted to, without meaning to. So, just as with a dog, you have to be sure the animal knows who is the master.

It's not really cruelty when the purpose is to establish the pecking order and the animal is not suffering any pain or serious emotional harm.

That way, the level of respect between animal and owner is established and we can proceed to spoiling the snot outta them with love and food!

I'm a Draft Horse junkie. I just love them.

I'd love to one day have a Shire Horse, if for no other reason than to just look at her all day!

She's been saddled, and I wouldn't expect any problems with it. In fact... I bought a little pony cinch for my saddle that might work... I haven't tried in awhile and I don't remember if it worked or not. She actually had 30 days under saddle with a trainer and was doing well before.
