This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good, remember the camera!
I don't know what our riding plans are... We're forecast to get rain, actually. One of the days we're goin' to the beach house to visit.
Good morning
Becky
Mornin'. I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner. Anybody got one that they like and recommend?
The SPCA in Texas has taken in hundreds of dogs and cats from the flood in NO and are adopting them out starting today, just heard that info on the news this morning. I may have to run over there and see what's interesting...I wonder if they have any horses?
I was all the time having to replace vacuums. I had always just gotten the cheaper models at Wal-Mart. About $100 ones, once a year. I got so tired of always having to get new ones, so I bought a top of the line from Sears. I can't remember what I paid for it but it lasted longer, but in the end, when it gave up the ghost I figured I still spent about $100 a year for it. And the last few years it was a struggle to keep it working well. So I decided to go back to the $100 Wal Mart brands and just buy one every year. So I went and bought another $100 one and have had it for about 5 years:).
I think the main reason I had so much trouble is my carpet was the exact color of pennies and pennies are very hard on them:). Now with the kids gone, I don't have so much trouble with pennies being in the floor.

I wondered about that. At the start of this mess, I didn't even think about the animals, until I saw the news inteview a guy from one of the shelters that had his dog with him. I was actually surprised that they allowed a dog in a shelter given the shortage of so much stuff. It got me to thinking of the poor things in the Superdome:(. The children and the animals:(....it "doesn't" bear thinking about them being in that place.
But your question about horses is interesting for the fact of what happened to them:(
Becky
I'm at the "tired of replacing them" point. About 2 or 3 years ago, my husband bought me that new Dyson and it worked really well but for the amount of money he paid for it, it should still be working. It has nearly no suction now and we've taken it apart and cleaned it, still no go. They are cheaply made, too. I'm thinking of a German canister vacuum, I hear canisters have more suck power because they have a big motor in the canister. With 5 kids coming in and out of the house, I need all the suck power I can get.
I was reading through a thread last night and it was soooo depressing. So many freepers advocating, "the hell with the animals, get the people out!" I think there is a way to do both, these people have had so much heartache in their lives, are we supposed to say, "ok, you can come but leave your dog you've had for 15 years to die in your house"?
We need to replace our floor covering, my poor carpet is about 23 years old:(. I would like to cover the whole house with ceramic tile and use area rugs. Brooms are alot easier to replace:)
Becky
I would LOVE to pull the carpet out and put in hardwood floors and area rugs, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon, if at all.
Tough choices have to be made in those situations....I don't think there is an answer to the animal question. I think I would have to just put any pets of mine down....
In that situation, if it came down to a child getting a drink of water and your pet...That's the biggest problem in this situation that I can see. Of course pets could have drank the flood waters easier then humans I guess, but....I don't know, there just isn't an answer to it that is satisfactory for all....
I've been wondering, after this, how many people will head to shelters now...I don't think I would.
I don't think "too hell" with them is the answer at all...but I don't see how you could justify taking an animal when every bit of water, food, and space in rescue vehicles is so critical.
Becky
All good points, for sure. Of course if it came down to my kids getting a drink or my dog getting a drink, anyone in their right might would give the child the available water. But if it was Tuffy.... LOL just kidding.
It's not going to happen around here very soon either, just because we don't have the energy or ambition to do it:). We've been tossing back and forth now for years if we want to just move. But that brings us back to, if we did want to move we would have to replace the flooring anyway, and alot of other update decorating, then we'd probably just want to stay:). We have been do it yourselfers for so many years. I'd redecorate if I could hire it all done, but even if I could afford to have it done, it seems stupid to do that when we could do it ourselves, we just don't want to:)
Becky
I know...just not anything easy.

So Dad says - I want to see you on him... and picks her up and sits her on his back. I am holding onto the lead rope. He initially looked up surprised...Then began to circle as I held the rope and was trying to tell dd to slide off. Next he violently jerked the rope through my hands - I didn't let go totally (rope burn to prove it) and bolted for the barn. Dd stayed on and probably would have been OK - except there are heavy trees on either side - I was afraid he would take off into the woods... so she did slide off - I on the other hand ran along with the rope in hand for several yards - then tripped and fell.
The next day I felt as if I had been in a car wreck...shoulders and arms sore from being jerked...scraped knee ... but mostly feeling so dumb for letting this happen. SO relieved dd wasn't hurt - or even frightened.... her comment "I think he was actually running - not just loping) I can't wait until I can ride him!!"
The colt was fine - he didn't act spooky just stopped at barn and went back to grazing. Not a good lesson for him, though.... We will start over step by step and make no more spur of the moment stupid decisions (I hope)
Guess this means I won't get Horse Mom of the Year award - LOL!
Well I'm glad no one was hurt seriously....
Was the horse bareback?
Becky
Don't beat yourself up too much over that, we've all done things on the spur of the moment that we regret. Whenever something like that happens at my house, my husband is nearly always involved. He's just not very good with horses.
LOL:)
Becky
I have a question that has bothered me for years, and I've never gotten satisfactory answers.
How much conditioning do you think a horse needs for differnt types of riding? Like my CTR's, or endurance, or pleasure?
Can a horse that is mostly at pasture be fine to do pleasure riding say once a week, once a month..etc.?
Will a few hours a week condition a horse well enough to do 40 miles in one weekend at a pace faster then just a walk?
Becky
Yes - he was bareback...We've put a pad and light saddle on him and he did fine (with ground work only)... we've put a bit in his mouth and let him mouth it awhile.... I think he will do fine when things are done in a structured way.
