The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No, he's got white spots now on his withers, that he didn't have before. I do watch for some stuff:). It is hard to tell on a palomino, but the white hairs showed up about the same time as the rub.

And yeah, as much as I don't want to, (how long will it take), I probably agree that I shouldn't ride him till that scab comes off on its own, if I want to know for sure what's causeing it. If I got bad now, who could say it is the saddle, pad, or just irratating an already sore spot.

Anyone been watching that mini series Empire. It's pretty good if you like that sort of thing. I'm finally getting around to watching last weeks episode, and am noticing the pretty horses:). The hero, Tyrannus is riding what looks like a Friesen (sp).

Understood, and I agree.... on your 401 post :~\

And I haven't heard of Empire... so no I haven't watched any of it.... What channel?

Fresians are cool, and often used for medieval kind of roles...

I don't think it's rain rot, if it was rain rot, it'd be all over him, not just in one little spot. Lots of horses tend to get it on their neck and chest, and they scab and ooze.

Empire is on ABC on Tues. nights. Next week is the last episode:)

Aren't Fresians a large horse that looks a bit drafty, but not as big as Clydesdales. Mostly black.

I'm wondering if Mark Antony's horse isn't a lipizzan. Very collected high stepping, very arched neck. ???

Anyway, it's pretty good. I like those Roman type movies.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't rain rot, it's just that the hair came out in clumps like it does with rain rot. Rain rot is the only skin fungus I've ever seen in horses, I didn't know if all fungus' cause the hair to come out like that in clumps, or if just the saddle rubbing would do that too.

Fresians are predominantly black, light-draft, with tufted feet. I think originally bred as a large, heavy riding horse to carry knights in heavy armour.

Lippizans and Andalusions are tough to tell apart and typically grey, no tufting on the feet, but have a similar heavy crested neck and high carriage on the stallions.

Yep, that's the horse that the Gladiator is riding:). Very pretty.

I've been outside. turned the horse in together, well Rusty and Harley, they ran the fence with Rock, and played in the arena, pictures loading.

I was looking at Harley's back, looks pretty symetrical to me. I took several pictures, and landed up deleting the one i was going to post. No big deal, I don't think you could have told anything anyway.

Oh ok, I'm sorry. My answer was a bit rushed, I was sending it off before I left work, (I was dancing to get out of there!) My apologies if I've sounded curt or rude. :-) I didn't know if you've seen rain rot before. I would've never seen rain rot either if it wasn't for a severely neglected horse that we once took in.

Kickin' it up!

That's a particularly cool 'wild eyed stallion' pic.

Glad he gets to play with the others, at least through the fence.

It's not just from neglected that horses get, Just about everyone I know who lives around here has had to deal with it a time or two. I saw one up the road one time that was a pretty bad case. It was a buckskin horse. By the time they got him over it it had killed the hair folicles and the hair came back in white. He looked just like an appaloosa after that.

No I didn't think you sounded rude either:). My post wasn't real clear why i put that part in. I think we all know each other well enough on here to know we are NEVER rude to each other:)

I'm glad they went and ran the fence with him. I wish he wasn't so mean when he was turned loose with them....

I was trying to catch him. He stood straight up several times and pawed the air, it looks pretty cool when he does that. But I missed it everytime. I also missed Harley picking up one of the tires in the arena and throwing it.

But I missed it everytime

I know it happens to me too. The shutter delay in digital cameras is really frustrating. So many times you miss the really good shot and get the shot 2 seconds later. Makes it hard to get the best action.

Hi everyone, fantastic pics!
The pics of the cabin is the large cabin we are in now. I have taken a pic of the "shack" but am too tired right now to post.
We had a disapointing day looking at property, all was not worth our trouble. The scenery was great on our journey though, but we did have a lot of rain. Tommorow we plan to take the kids to a state park and relax. : )
I'm logging out now and getting the kids ready for bed.
G'night!

I woke up this morning to a note from Charlie saying his horse was tied up behind the shop and would I check on him thru out the day to make sure he had water. Thought I'd take a picture:) Charlie got this horse when he was 2, he is 4 or 5 now. Charlie broke him and has trained him to rope. He doesn't get a lot of chances to ride in the early summer because work gets so busy, but things are catching up now and he is getting ready to get him going again. He's a bit squirrely sometimes. I've wondered if this is because he was never "imprinted" Just out in a pasture for the first 2 years till Charlie got him. But at the end of winter when Charlie had been riding him alot he was doing very well. Oh, his name is Zeke:)
