The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"have you seen him drop to pee?"

No, I haven't but I haven't been home much lately. Kids just started school this week and they are keeping me hopping.

Sept 10-11.

I talked to Celia yesterday. We are going together. She's going to ride drag. Anyway we are going to leave the evening of the 8th. I like having a day to let the horse get settled in and ride a bit in the area of the CTR. Since I'm taking the RV, I want to be sure to get there early enough to get an easy space to park in too:) and with electricity.

This will be my first time camping with her. Not sure how I will like that. I've always liked having my own place to go to at these things. Celia is a talker too...:). But with gas prices, it will be nice to split the expense.

It's funny, I never considered my self that competitive of a person. I've played at other sports and never worried about it. CTR's really brought out a streak of competitiveness in me:). Not necessarily to "win" but to just really do well. I get real focused and don't enjoy alot of distractions, especailly on trail. I've rode with her a few times when she was competeing, and had other competitors ride with me awhile, and chit chat gets on my nerves. This characteristic about my self surprised me:).

"She's going to ride drag."

Does that mean she's going riding dressed as a man?

By the way, I loved your pictures in the water! I used to take my first horse swimming in the lake, that it such a wonderful thing to do on a hot day.

See right now I'm getting this one confused with another Dean Koontz movie where there's this little boy with psychopathic uh I mean telekentic powers who has the ability to kill people very far away. But did you leave off in the part where the they were chasing him through the kitchen with the photograph?

Yeah, there is a kid who can kill people from far away. But we didn't get to the part where anyone was chasing him thru a kitchen. The thing with the photographs hasn't been explained yet either.

The guy looking for his wife and daughter just picked up the little girl, the black lady protecting her has just died, and now he's protecting the little girl. And the little boy is strapped down in a lab and starting to do things to get the girl.

...I need to do some research on this, I honestly don't know anything about bulging discs...

Good Morning Tuffy. I'm catching up here, so forgive me if somebody else has already suggested this, but I just recently heard of a new therapy for bulging disks. It's some kind of machine that's supposed to uncompress the disks. A local chiropractor that I go to has one. I don't know how you feel about chiropractic and I really don't know anything about it other than what I've heard on the commercials. They're advertising it as the non-surgical alternative for lower back problems. It might be worth checking into anyways. If it was me and there was any way I could avoid surgery I think I'd try that first.

... My mom saw her masectomy as a way to lose five pounds fast. The doc said it probably didn't weigh that much. ;~D

LOL!! Your Mom sounds like a hoot, and her doctor does too. It's great when people can still have a sense of humor about things when the going gets tough. Thanks for the grin.

...does your three piece ones have a band that goes over the top of the withers?...I just wondered what the purpose of it was?

Yes mine has that and I agree with Hair that it keeps the shoulder straps from running across the shoulder blade and creating a pressure point. It seems to make them function more like a pulling collar on a harness, if that makes any sense.

Well, you should get your order by Sept 8, I'd hope.

I think the CTRs are important to you because it showcases something you're really good at and take pride in. :~D

And I think I know what you mean with Celia... You've always done CTRs by yourself I think, and it will be different for you to bring someone else along for your CTR experience.

I can only compare with the mixed emotion of riding with my friend Tiff. Tiff changes the woods from a quiet place to a loud place. She sings, talks a lot, likes to go fast, and is looking for excitement. We often go places that are new to me, where I have no control of the situation and where there's scarcely a trail and she's not sure where she's going either. There's adventure in it, and a little of that is good, but I've found I like riding with just my husband most of all :~D

I'm going to send your information on to my mother. I would definitely recommend to her that she try the chiropractic option first and I think she probably will. Going under the knife sucks.

I'm sitting here at my computer, reading through the posts, and a spider is dropping on his line right in front of me. Brave little sucker, that spider.

Since she is riding drag, I won't be riding with her. It will just be at camp.

Several times I've had new riders attach themselves to me. The thing that starts bothering me is sometimes they want to go at a different pace then I do, and the timeing thing is something that really is a focus point for me. Especially when they want to go slower where you could move out. I try to remember I was a beginner one time:)

I had one lady once ride up on me and said, I'm going to ride with you awhile. That was OK, but she kept having to stop for different reasons and I couldn't ride off and leave her because that would have agitated her horse. I was really clinching my jaws everytime she needed to stop to fix her hat, her saddle, her bags....

I've been tempeted to tie red ribbons on my horses tails:). I know a few people who do that, just to keep people at a distance. But, IMO, that makes your horse look bad. I don't think horses that have known kicking problems should be allowed to do it. As important as safety is to the judges and the fact that they are looking for ideal trail horses to me should rule a known kicker out, or at least be a deduction...

I'm like you, I'm not really looking for "excitment," and adventure on trail rides, the competition adds enough of that.

Becky

If I could change one thing about it...would be that the strap over the neck had a snap on it to unhook it. That would make it easier when saddling and unsaddling.

Mine has a snap there, as well as on the ends of the shoulder straps and the end of the cinch strap. Taking it off is a breeze. There are also buckles on each of these straps in addition to the snaps, which makes it infinitely adjustable. I have to let them all out for 17hh Tennessee and take them up about 6 holes on each strap for Blade and Bob. It works out really well.

Oh - I thought you might go last to ride with her, riding drag. Good for you to be separate if that's how you'll ride the best ride.
