This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I saw a report on your heat... records in Vegas and AZ... We had 90 on Monday, but today it's cool and grey, 59 degrees. I hope Friday is more like today for our ride!
She's doing fine and growing like a weed. Her baby hair is shedding off and she has that moth-eaten look about her right now, so she's not very pretty but she's roaning out nicely.
She had her first experience with the clippers this past Sunday and was not amused. I think she thought I had a giant horse fly in my hand was trying to kill her with it. She finally calmed down and let me clip her jawline. I needed to do her ears but didn't have the right clippers for that. We'll do that another day.
Well, that's just plumb aggravating! I would definately want to see it before they put it back together. It sounds like something definately changed about it for this to just start happening, although I have no clue as to what it might have been. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.
We've noticed white hairs throughout Cyn's barrel and hindquarter recently. I think she's too old to begin roaning if she was going to significantly roan out, but I hadn't noticed it before.
Back home. The difference in the two sides is soooooooooooo slight, that I believe is why I'm having a problem with Harley is the wore out pad not because of the difference in the tree. There is a differnce, that is why the fleece on the back side is wearing unevenly, but it's taken 10 years. I felt the old pad, in that same spot the pad has wore more thin. I think with new pads I'll be fine. The saddle guy at this shop thought so too. It's worth a try before I put more money into it.
It's not really even that the pitch in the bars was off, it was more that the part of the tree that lays on the withers one side was more rounded, hard to describe. I did take some pictures of it apart, but I doubt you'll be able to tell from the pictures. I'll post them later, Mack is doing office work, so I can't get to the computer. I'll take a picture of the way the fleece is wearing too. They put it back together, while I ran to Pet Smart for wormers, and I have it back now.

I did ask the guy if he thought that this difference was from the beginning, or did it warp, and he said he thought it was from the beginning. I tend to agree, altho I don't blame the shop that built it, it is sooooo slight. I agree because I know what I've done with this saddle. If I had been roping or something like that, I could see a tree warping, but I've never dallyed to anything.

Did you consider or talk about trimming or adding pad to compensate for it?
I don't know the material... I wondered if it might warp from the stand it sits on, or heat, or getting wet, or something.
She may be graying instead of roaning. Like you say, it's a little late for her to be roaning. Roans get roan when they shed their baby hair. Gray's can start much later, like the Lipizzans and Arabs. How old is she now? Do you know if she has any gray or roan in her background?
I know that in order for a horse to be roan, it has to have at least one roan parent. The roan gene cannot skip a generation. If they have it, they're gonna be roan. If they don't, they're not and they can't pass it on. I don't know if gray works that way or not.
Another thing I learned the other day is that there's no such thing as a homozygous roan. There's some kind of genetic defect connected with it that causes the embryo to die before it ever implants. I just found that interesting.
I asked about shaving that more rounded place down a bit, and he said he couldn't do that. I didn't ask why. I think adding pad to the saddle would be impossible, it probably wouldn't stay in place for long.
As far as it getting wet, I don't believe this saddle has ever gotten wet enough to soak down to the tree. The wooden tree is wraped in rawhide. There are seveal layers of leather. The heat warping it....I wouldn't think so...There have been times when I've stood it on the horn for lengths of time....but hell, everyone does that. 95% of the time it's been on the rack in my trailer.
I really think it was like this originally. In the past I have always been very good at getting new pads about every year. This time I let it go about 3. I just felt since I wasn't riding as much as I use to Belle, I was OK. If the problems resolves itself now with these new pads, I'll be sure to replace my pads very often again.

I bought a new cinch today. My old one was getting rather stiff from wear and horse sweat etc. They only wash out so much then it's time to replace. I figured with all the problems a wore pad is causeing me, I'd better go ahead and replace the cinch now too. I'm just about going to have all new tack.
I learned something else new today too. Did you know that bits that have moving parts wear out. Charlie looked at the bit I use to trail ride in and point out that the hinged parts are getting sharpe edges from wear, and that it has alot looser in the hinged parts that could pinch tongues....sigh....more money.

Yeah, nothing lasts forever, much as we would like it to. I need to replace the "D"s on the front of my saddle where the breast collar hooks coz they've almost worn in two. I've got new "D"s, I just never seem to get around to putting them on.

Looks like we should keep records of when things should be replaced.

Wow, according to these estimates, everything I own should've already been replaced! Of course frequency of use plays into some of this. Becky, you probably ride more in 1 year than I ride in 5. Then there's type of material. Nylon lasts a lot longer than leather. I guess the thing to do is to just do a thorough inspection of everything on a fairly frequent basis. In a perfect world, we'd do it before every ride. Not that that's ever gonna happen, but it should.
