This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It was a huge mess years later in Eastern WA, because it doesn't go away. You still see it today along the ditches each side of the road. It's like flour, super fine and it blows around in any wind at all, and when it gets wet it turns into a paste and doesn't wash away. The ash is too sterile to grow anything in where it's deep, but where it could be plowed in, it was OK.
In the forests, they could replant trees where it was less than a foot, they dug down to the dirt and made a little pit for it, one by one.
In the areas that were left natural, they spoke of the benefit of moles who survived underground, and brought dirt to the surface. But that's a slow process.

LOL!! Pardon me for laughing, but the exact same thing happened to me on my horse Tennessee several years ago. It was the full harvest moon and I just couldn't resist taking a moonlight ride because it was almost like daylight. We were riding across this big open field and all of a sudden, he just dead stops and wouldn't budge. You can tell that he's seeing something that I couldn't because his ears were pricked all the way forward, hard. Well, you know how if you don't look directly AT something in the dark, you can see it better, kind of a "soft focus"? Well, I did that, and I could see all these little bouncing white things out in the field in my peripheral vision. It took me a minute to figure out what it was...Deer tails...running away. I sat there a minute watching them and the next thing I know, I'm hanging in the air like Wylie Coyote and my horse is GONE. I hit the ground like a sack of bricks, flat of my back, and all the wind is knocked out of me. I get up and try to holler "Whoa" but all that comes out is a wheezy croak. It was SO funny. The not funny part is that Tennessee went home without me, across a very busy highway, in the dark. I was SO thankful that he didn't get hit by a truck. But I still get a chuckle out of that little incident occasionally. I'll bet it was a deer that Waylon saw. They spook most horses big time.

It has to be a while later, I'm afraid, it's a longer and harder trailer trip down there than we've made yet, and I'm not sure yet that we should to that kind of drive in dad's truck.

Glad you are enjoying the volcano stuff, it's fun to share it.
Yeah, it's interesting and hard to believe it's been almost 25 years. It's one of those "where were you" moments that you always remember. I was a senior in college when it happened. I was working an internship with IBM in Raleigh NC and staying with my cousin who lives there and works for IBM too. I remember seeing it on their TV. It was so strange.
Pardon me but I have to vent:)
If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all....again.
My farrier left after shoeing one horse. He is sick.

Well, I'll be dawg! You ARE having a spell of bad luck. Sounds like you're just gonna have to break down and buy yourself a new saddle.
I've got my name on the list to get a new one from this Amish guy up in Tennessee. He probably won't get around to me until the first of the year, but that's ok. I'm in no great rush. It'll just be an additional saddle. I ordered it big enough that my husband could use it (if he ever would). It'll be a bit big for me, but that's ok. My butt doesn't appear to be getting any smaller. ;o)
Sounds like fun. Y'all are really nice hosts! We'll be eagerly awaiting the pictures coz I know there'll be some. ;o)
Well, I'm having some real doubts that these saddles are broke. I had trouble seeing what they were talking about when they said it "gave" in when pressed on.
They stood it on the horn then leaned on it. There was movement in them where the seat joins the swells. Jenny's "gave" more then mine did, but mine is a heavier built saddle. Lots more leather on it. Leather WILL give when pressed on. I think we're just seeing the leather give. BUT the owner of the saddle shop, the guy that built both these saddles said mine was broke...???
I think I'm going to run them over to another saddle shop in town, and get another opinion.
There is something going on with my saddle and Harley. He does have a bare spot on his withers. And the fleece on my saddle is wore off at that point. But I'm seriously doubting now that they are broke. If they are broke I'll not be having that shop fix it, that's for sure. Or buy another saddle from them.
If it turns out it's not broke, I may just get an Abetta to ride in and use this one just to run in. It does give a more secure feel then the few times I've ridden in an Abetta. But the Abetta would be fine for trails and practice.
LOL....But all this could change within the next hour. I hate having to make decisions about things I'm not sure about and don't have anyone I trust to get advise from.

I know whatcha mean. I always feel like I'm being "taken for a ride" on stuff that I don't know anything about. It's good that you're getting a 2nd opinion. Are you going to tell the 2nd saddle shop what the other one said or are ya just going to take it to them and see if they tell you the same thing?
I called and asked them if they could look at a saddle and tell if the tree is broke. They said yes. So I'll be leaving here in a few minutes to go get my saddle over at the ranch. It's in my sons tack room over there. I've got to wait on him to unlock it for me.
I'm so glad to hear someone else feels that way about being taken for a ride:). I just find it odd that they would say their own saddle's are broke....of course they already had reasons to blame it on other then themselves:).
Do you think an old pad could be the problem? My old saddle pad was pretty wore out. Do you think that could have let it rub him that much?

This dry spot and rubbing thing was a fairly recent event wasn't it? I wouldn't think your old pad would suddenly cause this unless something else was going on. The new thicker one might if it makes it too tight at the withers. Trees do break, but I'd think it usually takes something pretty drastic like a horse falling over backwards on it to do it. And maybe it got cracked when Belle fell with it a long time ago and has just been gradually giving way all this time, but Jenny's saddle being "broke" too just sounds so weird to me, you all of a sudden having 2 saddles with broke trees. I'll be interested to see what these other people say. Of course they may say the same thing, just so they can sell you a new saddle. The only way you're really gonna know for sure yourself is to strip it down to the tree and look, but that's a little drastic and you'd need to know what you're doing. I myself wouldn't attempt it but you said Charlie knows a thing or two about saddles. I'd be tempted to order one of those Martha Josey saddles you like and let Charlie tear the old one down, just out of curiosity. But then, maybe I'm just being paranoid. ;o)
Hope you have good news about your saddles when you take them in!
