This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
LOL. That's a good one. lol
I doubt you're going to hurt SL putting pressure anywhere that works.
Real question is, why don't you have a halter?
"I know who runs a boarding stable, gives lessons, sells horses, etc,has beautiful facuilities"
Made me tired reading all that. Too much work for me. If you don't have kids or a farm to take care of, the hauling horses would be fun.
"Well at least he didn't look at you after he said it like my vet did with Cindydawg"
How'd he look at you? Disapprovingly?
"My vet looks at me, the fat dog, and decides the horses look pretty good."
LOL I keep Tuffy fat so when I ride him, his big butt makes mine look small.
Speaking of, I rode Tuffy and Winnie tonight. Tuffy acted sore so I cut his ride short and saddled up Winnie. She doesn't like me as well as she likes Mandy but she did good. Picked up both leads first time I asked, something she's had trouble with in the past.
I'm glad she's doin so well now.
What's up with Tuffy? just out of shape?
My BIL left it. I have Okies bridle. We are getting things straight this weekend. My trainer showed me how to make an emergency halter today though, after she called me out of the arena. She was talking to me like I remember talking to my youngest when he was two and climbed up on the roof. Wasps. I was thinging it was kind of nice that all the kid campers out. We had the place to ourselves:')
He looked at me the same way he looked at the dog before he told me she was too fat. He really can't throw stones though:')
But how'd he get her in the trailer to get her there without a halter?
Oh, I feel so stupid. It's in Eddie's jeep!
The shoer cut him a bit short this time. He's getting better, just not ready for riding yet.
"Wait. I lied. He took it back with him. Yeah that's what happened Hair. He took it back. I'm so embarrassed."
ROTFL
Gotta run, ladies. This horsey sweat smell is getting tiresome.
Your brother in law shipped Sara Lee without a halter? Tell him to make sure he ships Okie with one!
I used to manage a 14 horse facility, (which is small by some standards, but large for me, because it was only me) in addition to working in the lesson program as well. It was a 24+ hr/day job, and I never had any energy when I got home, but I was a heck of a lot happier then I am now that's for sure. :-/ I really want my own facility. I miss it all like you wouldn't believe.
Good morning.
Well I still have Rusty:). It was rather a funny situation. This ladies place was very nice, but in the front yard where she wanted me to ride him there were a lot of boogers. Her house sits behind her mothers house. Her mother has white picket fence aroun her back yard, and Julia has it around her front yard. Inside her mothers back yard there was some statuary, and a fountain, a alot of yard furniture. This yard bordered on the pasture where there was a big orange round bale feeder (do horses see color). The reason she wanted me to ride him was to see how spooky he would be. She was thinking he was just good here because he was familiar with everything, and she wondered about how much he would loose his cool in a new place. All legitimate concerns.
He went thru most of it just looking, no snorting or sidestepping, but he did look alot. The orange feeder did give him pause, but he just stopped and looked very alertly. After about 2 laps around the yard he was fine. But I had a feeling that even that made her nervous, she is very afraid of bucking.
Anyway, she was commenting that the horse was calming down fast, and then her husband came out. He came over and was looking at him, I had stopped to be introduced. He did walk up and stood right infront of Rusty, and started patting him right in the face. I really don't like that sort of thing, especially when I'm on the horse. I wish people would pat on necks or shoulders, but they always seem to go right for the face. But Rusty was fine. He looked the horse over, said he really liked the looks of him, thought he was pretty. Unusual color. (there was a funny thing about that too, I'll tell later)
I didn't realize tho, that when he came out he had let a Great Dane out into their fenced front yard, being a picket fence it was hard to see in. I really don't think Rusty saw him in there at all. Well, I started to walk Rusty off, I could tell they wanted to talk. As I rode past the picket fence, this huge Great Dane barked and jumped up with his front feet on to the top of the fence.... That was it. Rusty really did well, but he did jump sidewise and spin away. Big spook. I had to LOL. I knew the sale was blown even tho it was a perfectly excusable spook. I'm pretty sure any horse would have reacted. Even her husband who was a beginner said it wasn't that big of deal, but Julia wants to think about it some more, and maybe come ride him somemore. But I really think it's over, so I'm not sure I'll even do that. I don't think she'll be comfortable with him now. She tried to say her other horse didn't "spook" that much, but her husband said he did, and still does, and had never had a dog jump at him either...
But anyway the one thing that could happen that I can excuse her backing out happened:). So he'll stay mine for awhile.

In running this place did you find time to do much riding on of your own?
I know Debbie the friend that owns this place and hauls, doesn't ride much herself. I worked for her one summer, She had me lunge the horses she was suppose to be riding for people. I only worked for her for a few months. I didn't feel good about it, knowing some of the corners she cut without the boarders knowing. But then too, I alwayes felt the borders were rather stupid to not figure out what was going on. I think Debbie kept them dazzled tho with the facuilities which were the very best. Covered dressage arena, large outdoor arena, covered metal, high sided, slanty walled round pen, beautiful barns, etc...and everything kept mowed and landscaped. I always wondered how the boarder thought she and just her husband kept up with all that. I was the only hired help and I only worked 2 days a week for a few hours.

Frog, having roan horses, I thought you'd appreciate this little antedote.
While i was saddling Rusty up, Julia was telling me that she had talked to her neighbor who said she knew me. I have NO idea who this woman is, but Julia said the lady asked whose horse she was looking at and Julia said I don't know her last name but her first name is Becky. (This neighbors name is Becky also, so you'd think if I had met her I'd remember). the lady said Becky, gave my last name and said lives up on the mountain? Julia said yeah that's her. This lady said which horse is she selling, and Julia said Rusty, what do you know about him. This lady said he's a good horse, ugly, but good.....LOL, I've never had anyone say Rusty was ugly:).
I looked up at Julia and said I have never met a lady named that, I have no clue who she is and I don't think she could be talking about Rusty. Julia said this lady said the horse was roan, and people just don't like roans, but Rusty was an alright horse:)....
What was funny, is when the husband came out the first think he commented on was Rusty's "unusal" color, and how pretty it was:), the daughter was even there and commented how pretty he was. I pointed that out to Julia and told her to tell her neighbor she wouldn't know a pretty horse if she saw one,LOL.
Rusty is the only horse I have ever hauled with Rocky that has gotten comments on how pretty he was. I use to complain to Jenny that when I hauled Belle with Rocky no one ever noticed her, but if she was by herself I got compliments all the time. I've never run into anyone that didn't think roans were beautiful....do your roans get lots of compliments?
Becky
