The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm sorry you are upset about Juma being sold. But you know, for the price this woman had to give for him, she'll take care of him. Those barrel racers really do take good care. I wouldn't worry.

IMO, your husband is correct in telling you you are crazy if you try to make money on the horses. What he is telling you is exactly what I ran into. Turning it into work takes all the fun out.

You just need to get tuffy in shape and start meeting me at some CTR's:)

I'd keep working it and ~try~ to have patience with her. If she does decide to get him, it will be a well reasoned decision to take him. The only fear would be the daughter coming around once in a blue moon and working him too hard. If the mother would enforce the daughter not overstressing him, then that will take care of itself, especially if the daughter is leaving for school soon.

What does she know of his prior overheating issue?

What would you think of letting her have him for a couple weeks on trial so you know he'll work for her?

Who's horse would he be? Hers, or the beginner husband? Is he good for a beginner?

Well good luck with the demo ride this evening. I'm sure he'll do fine and hopefully she'll stick to her word and buy him, but if she doesn't I wouldn't blame you for getting mad. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for ya.

If the daughter comes to ride she is going to ride the horse her mother rides when she comes here. Rusty will be entirely Julia's horse. The husband will ride the one Julia rides now too. Julia says her husband wouldn't like Rusty because he is too "small".

I've really told her emphatically, that Rusty needs to be rode easy for another month, brought back into good physical condition slowly. I've told her waht the vet has told me about his past, that it's all in the past:). He is healthy and sound, just needs some sensible conditioning. She's all for that, she says she sometimes will lope or trot short distances, but for the most part is happy just walking.

Sounds really great, I hope she takes him.

Now... just go in there relaxed, and don't make Rusty nervous!

Oh, and no, I'm not letting another horse of mine be taken for a trail run. I've told her she can come and try him here all she wants. She just has told me now several times, If he does this, this and this, I'll buy him, then he does it and she comes up with some reason to back out. I guess I don't have alot of patience, another reason i want to stop buying and selling, I'm not good at it.

If she wants to keep trying him fine, just don't tell me, if he does such and such I'll take him and then not take him.

IMO, her change of mind this time is a smart move. Her daughter is not going to be riding that much, and for her to buy something the daughter wants, when the daughter wants something that she won't be comfortable with is not smart. So she is trying to think with her head instead of her heart.

Hey, I've been meaning to ask any of you if you've heard that dogs can be wormed with horse wormers???

Becky, I wouldnt. I know of dogs that have died from being fed horse wormers by accident. Especially moxidectin and, I think, Ivemectrin. Safeguard has a different ingredient but I'm pretty sure if you read the labels they ALL say, not safe for dogs, foals (under x years of age), etc. etc.

Use a dog wormer for dogs. Safeguard does make one for them if you want to go with that brand but I wouldnt dose with horse wormer. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/2178447022/002-3598983-4687211?v=glance. Also, safeguard is not the best product for tapeworms, at least in horses. (Questplus, Equimax or Ivemectrin is).

Oh, I'm really not worried about Rusty not doing good. I told her I fully expect him to get out of the trailer and be more alert then she's seen him be around here, but that's normal.

I agree that under the circumstances, a horse suited for the daughter would not help them.

You mind telling the purchase price?

I really think he is worth more, but I want to sell, and this would be a great set up for him. I started a little higher, and I think that was part of why she didn't want him. I gathered that today while she was talking, so I dropped some and now she's interested again. But I wont' come down more, no matter how great the situation is. That's what I gave for him, and I think a being a "safe" horse is worth something.

It's absolutely worth a good price, and $2000 is a reasonable price for a safe trail horse. If he was competitive you could sell for more, but you aren't trying to send him that direction.

but I like to support the trail maintenance, lobbying and education efforts of the organization as a whole.

That is an excellent reason to join a group. If not for lobbying, many trails would be lost. If our local group would not have been involved in a Rail-to-Trail, there would not be a strip along the blacktop for horses. True, there is always discontent in any organization. After all we are human with different opinions. Riding in large organized groups is not my cup of tea, but it is a good way to learn new areas.

You have been around horse people enough, to know how they can be, (might be why you have your doubts...eh!) Give it a go, you can only get involved as much as you want to.

I know I shouldn't be sad but I can't help it. He was my first baby. (baby horse, that is)

Tuffy is so fat and out of shape it's starting to draw comments. When my shoer was here last time he stood back to look at Tuffy and said, "that horse is fat!" LOL Don't hold back Jim, tell us how you really feel!

I wish there was a way to get into the horse business without it being so aggravating. Maybe buying weanlings and putting some age and weight on them then selling them as "prospects".

We've tried every aspect of the horse business. It's tough. IMO, it just takes along time to get your foot in the door. I think if you can stick it out for along time and build a name you might have a chance. I've never had the patience to do that. I want to ride, work with my own horse, it's not fun, at for me, to see your own horse standing there doing nothing. And riding more then one a day is not fun. At least for me it wasn't:)

I know who runs a boarding stable, gives lessons, sells horses, etc,has beautiful facuilities, but makes her best money hauling horses. I was surprised how much in demand there is for someone to haul horses across countries, and what people will pay to have that done.

My dad took my sister and I riding in a parade in Alvin when we were little. We had a blast. Today, no way. People are crazy.

Does it hurt to put light pressure on the rounded jaw area to get them moving? I had Sarah Lee in the arena working on some ground stuff. ( I don't have a halter right now ). She minded good except when she came to horse steams. I just pushed forward with my palm until she moved on. Not roughly or anything.

My vet looks at me, the fat dog, and decides the horses look pretty good.
